100.3 The Beat

May or may not be news. May or may Not be nothing. May or may not deserve a new thread.
While doing a channel scan today I noticed for the first time that WRKH 96.1 The Rocket was displaying their station logo on my HD radio instead of artists information, I flipped to 96.1-2 and saw the WNTM710 logo instead of text. I flipped channels and just found standard HD text from 94.9, 99.9 101.5, & 107.3.

Is this a thing?

Last time I noticed changes in HD text was an hour before The Beat 100.3 went live.

Glad you mentioned this too. When I scanned on 99.9 usually on my radio it says "WMXC-FM" and under that gives station title and/or Artist and Title information. However instead of WMXC-FM, it displayed "LITE-FM". Strange. I thought it was a mistake so I checked back this morning and it stil displayed "LITE-FM".

On a side note, apparently 100.3 The Beat smoked those 10,000 joints in a row. How long did that take?
I drove 2/3 the way to work before they ended the commercial break.

I can't find any logos today.

Last 6 months I've been using a 2015 Toyota factory radio for HD.
They told me it was the base radio.

I still don't know how to set the clock.

That's interesting. I figured the only Toyota radios that would support HD and any extended features would be the high end Entune system. I know the Insignia radios don't support anything like this, except for the very limited availability model that had a full color touch screen. It was a really bad radio from what I've read so it didn't stick around long.

Of all the stations to add graphics I figured WDLT would be first. On a couple of different radios I've used the radios show a blank space for album art on that channel that they never did for anyone else. But then most radios won't actually decode WDLT's HD signal and they don't seem to know or care about that. I'm about 50/50 across four or five different HD radios of various types.

Someone at iHeart HAS been tinkering, though. I noticed that 99.9's HD now shows them simply as "Lite 99" with Christmas music, and the station call sign is now LITE-FM. No more Lite Mix after Christmas?

This is all I saw today. No station logos.

That's album art! Interesting. I bet the logo would show up during a commercial break if you didn't touch the radio for a while.

Would you mind if I pilfered that snapshot for use on my website? I've got a pretty decent collection of snapshots people have taken of their radio displays. It's pointless but for some reason I feel compelled to collect them. :)

To answer Groove's post, this is HD PAD data, not RDS. RDS does not (yet) have the ability to have graphical art, although it's incorporated into the RDS 2.0 spec that was recently finalized.

Any photo I post is fair game for you or anyone else. Some photos I've posted (like WNVY and WCOA photos may belong to the Pensacola Historical Society, but anything that obviously came from my phone/camera is all yours.

I don't know if that's new or not. 99.9-2 shows facial profiles of mostly black men while songs are playing. They never show album art like 96.1. 94.9 will show a generic photo with the word country on it with the artist/ song info under it. 96.1-2 just shows text, NewsTalk710WNTM. But Tuesday they had the same logo as their website.

You don't have equipment capable of showing what I see?
I'm not too sharp when it comes to snapping photos of cool shiznit, I'll see what I can come up with.
I want to see those logos again. I really want to see a 100.3 The Beat logo on Lite99.9-HD2.

What's up with this 101.5-2 station that plays War followed by a pop song followed by Velvet Underground? I'm hella confused by that wild ass "Jack" type format.

I don't care, start a new thread about Mobile HD if you want.

Thank you. I've added it to my website. I can't fathom what The Beat's HD feed is showing faces for. Maybe they don't have album art embedded in their mp3 files? LOL.

I think it's a work in progress and probably new. The last time I was in a car that I know had album art ability was at the VW dealer over on Navy Blvd and that was a year or so ago, maybe longer. WDLT had the album art generic placeholder but none of the other stations did. On a relative's Mazda HD radio it has no art that I could see, but WDLT had an extra album field in addition to artist and song and the station name/format.

All I own are the Insignia models, an old one, a second gen and the current third or fourth gen model with the gray cladding. I'm not about to get rid of my rusty trusty old car so I won't be getting a new car radio anytime soon. The amplified antenna is shot and I don't feel like replacing it. To be honest, outside of my website I never actually listen to local radio anymore. It's just too depressing sometimes.

The 101.5-2 feed is Duran Duran Guest DJ on iHeart Radio. Strangely, they've moved on to other Guest DJ artists on iHeart online but this is still carrying Duran Duran. They're playing songs from their new album interspersed with band picked favorites, hence the "all over the map" sound. It was even weirder when it was Josh Groban radio, because it would go from the Temptations to stuff that was practically opera music, then Green Day.

I'd love to see any pictures you can take of the album art stuff on the various channels. This is honestly the first time I've seen the feature in use outside of promotional stills from the iBiquity people. I figured it would be confined to top 50 markets only, but it's nice to see it trickle down to smaller cities.

Other than the religious outlets. Translators have no value in Mobile. Atmospheric conditions are so bad, and with a lack of very tall towers in the metro, the signal is poor. However as I said they are great for religious broadcasters that want to target their strongest supporters in places such as Daphne. I predict any sold will go to religious broadcasters, or to AM in markets that are more centrally located. The mobile metro is too stretched out with the conditions listed. That is why you have seen very little activity. Expect to see more moves, but some time before you hear them.

I'd really like to see an Alternative type of HD2 feed on 101.5-2 not guest Dj's. That's hogwash to me for whoever in management to decide that. Personally Smooth Jazz should have never left 99.9-2, weird to move the dial and you get Hip Hop crap - again, another personal weak management decision. Why don't you put Hip Hop on 107.3-2 or on 94.9-2? I don't know but sometimes the Mobile folks that run iHeart Radio seem lazy and not practical in their decision making. You really think The Beat is taking a slice out of BLX'? Lol, c'mon man (insert voice on MNF Crew).

And as for seeing Lite 99? I thought that brand was dead or at least dying out - I wouldn't be surprised to see the "MY FM" come back to Mobile/Pensacola. It's in Tuscaloosa and Tallahassee. There should be some rebranding towards 99.9. They're logo and voice dude is outdated. And they do play a lot of the same songs. But the PD insists that they play the "most variety" than any other station on the Gulf Coast. MMmmmm, okay...

Bring back MY-FM (see below)

-So my theory of Goforth pairing up WLPR with W295BB in Fairhope and moving W258AQ to Mobile is realistic? But would Goforth program a third station or sell WLPR with those 2 translators for cash?

-I've always thought EMF would pick up 2 translators so they could add Air1 to Mobile's new KLove 98.3. I still expect that to happen... sooner rather than later.

-I bet Way FM wants into Mobile too. 2 translators and a host station could make that a reality. Maybe a non-com translator?

-I just assume WABF will wind up with a translator. Hopefully it's just money holding them up.

-Would Bay Minnete be able to support the right format on WTOF paired with a new translator?

-Would a translator make sense for WDXZ on Hwy 59? Maybe a simulcast or a partial simulcast with WHEP?

-I still think iHeart wants 3 more translators in Mobile.

Y'all have convinced me Cumulus might not play with Translators in Mobile unless something just falls in their lap, then it'll just go to a WGOK simulcast.

Now with all those depressing speculations on the future of the Mobile-Baldwin FM dial, we still have the possibility of up to 5 new LPFMs. One or more of those might not suck. One or more LPFM might be able to afford a translator!

No HD today in Pensacola. Tropo's so bad all I can pick up are 88.1 and 106.1.

Last night (3-5 am) I got hung up on a bandscan of FM because conditions were so good. Added a lot of pictures to the website highlighting some of the RDS stuff.

At one point, I was getting WJSP's HD out of Warm Springs, GA (Columbus market) on top of WUWF's analog audio. It was weird to hear the BBC World Service devolve briefly into classical music over and over as the signal came and went.

The distance record of the night has to be WFSH, licensed to Athens on 104.7. It popped in quite strongly after WZZK faded out. Other highlights included WMRK from Montgomery on 107.9 and WTSU both in full HD for a little while.

Groove's post makes a lot of sense. The translator market is definitely different now with the spectre of moving them up to 250 miles. Although in our case, where else would they go? Baton Rouge or New Orleans, maybe Jackson? All the other markets are smaller and I can't see small potatoes affording the cost to move a translator that far, even if that's what the entire purpose of the revitalization plan was supposed to be.

Z. Kudos to the updates on your site. easier to read and navigate.

Z. It is a information site. Functionality and navigation is the key, and you have achieved that. It is easier to read, dark backgrounds are more strain on the eyes. Any plans for a Mississippi site where so many Alabama stations (like ours) cross over the state line.

BTW: I have some updates for you soon :)

When I lived in Mississippi I seriously considered it, but never found the time to carry it out. I think I would have been compelled to include Memphis since it's a major city right on the state line and that kind of put me off of completing the project because it would be a lot more time consuming.
