KSWM

My wife picked up a CD with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. The only notes on the liner was 'Recorded at KSWM, San Francisco". The date appears to be 1999. The Internet has no more information than that either

The only KSWM now in the data base is in Branson, Missouri.

So does anybody have any information on KSWM, San Francisco in the 1999 time frame.

Thanks

Only thing I've been able to find out is that KSWM call letters seem to have first been used in the Joplin, Missouri area in the 1940s.

The title on the CD is "The 199 Radio Broadcast Emmy Lou Harris & Linda Ronstadt Live on KSWM". The location is not specified on the CD but other web sites indicate it is San Francisco.

If the call letters are not correct, what might they be. I can't think of what they could be. KSAN maybe, but that is a stretch.

The album was released earlier this year and looks like it could be a bootleg. It is being sold through legitimate channels, such as Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Live-On-KSWM-Emmylou-Harris/dp/B00W6ETCYI/ref=cm_cr_pr_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8 ) and Wal-Mart ( http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/emmylou...wm-the-1999-radio-broadcast-2cd/6000195463871 )....but the label, Laser Media, appears to specialize in "unofficial" releases: http://www.discogs.com/label/576281-Laser-Media

Emmylou Harris' website archives show she and Linda toured in August, September and October of 1999 in support of their "Western Wall" album and on September 10, played the Warfield in San Francisco. There's no indication that it was ever a radio broadcast.

I'm betting bootleg and that the label (a subsidiary of a German company, Blueline, that specializes in "lost" material) just made up the "radio broadcast" and call letters.

I remember seeing a lot of these "unofficial" CD's in shops in Ireland back in the late 1990's. I did buy one "hits" CD compilation but the tracks didn't sound quite right - kind of like they were unreleased studio recordings.

That sounds reasonable. The engineering though sounds quite good (except for one track out of the CD). It sounds like a fairly large venue (definitely not a studio). It may have been recorded with the intent to broadcast it later but that never happened.

How do you feel about WSM?

Doesn't mean it was part of a radio broadcast. It could have been promoted and recorded by a San Francisco radio station but never broadcasted in it's entirety or at all.

The call letters don't fit. This German music company has all the earmarks of a bottom-feeder attempting to legitimize bootleg recordings. Surprised they got distribution through Amazon and Wal-Mart.

So that gives me two choices. The San Francisco or the Nashville concert. The sound certainly appears to be from a large venue. I was almost speculating outdoors. So the call letters are no going to be a big help.

BTW, if this is a bootleg recording, it is not your typical bootleg. The recording has been professionally recorded and mixed. The only thing that differentiates it from a typical live performance recording, and what caught my ear immediately, is that the applause at the end of each song is faded almost immediately. Most live recordings let the applause go on for a few seconds anyway.

Actually, given that there's very little you can point to in terms of accuracy from the label, this probably could have been from any of the 22 dates on the tour. There were at least four outdoor venues...Portland, Oregon; Saratoga, California; San Diego, California and Tulare, California.

If it smells like onions it's from Tulare.

Based on the setlist and some tape trader info I can say with pretty good confidence that this show was recorded September 10. 1999 at the Wharfield Theater in San Francisco. It also featured Buddy Miller and Bernie Leadon as part of the band. The recording being traded also includes the soundcheck. I'm also pretty confident that the disc is a bootleg.

Thanks everyone for their help. Unless anyone has new information, I think we might be able to declare this topic closed. I will add a note inside my CD case :)

I'm really late to this party, but it is noteworthy that KSWM is currently licensed to Branson, MO. Branson is a location where many crossover county-pop artists have their own venues and perform there year-round. Could a Branson performance be connected to this recording?

Incidentally, the Joplin, MO KSWM mentioned above allegedly stood for K-South-West-Missouri. They had a radio station and put the first Joplin TV station on the air (channel 12), and both the radio and the TV eventually became KODE.
