Entravision cancels morning newscasts nationwide

Entravision continues its downsizing of news operations. It has now canceled the morning newscasts in all of its stations across the country, laying off most of the talent.

Buenos Días DC, Despierta San Diego, Despierta El Paso and Alegre Despertar in McAllen are among the morning shows affected. Staffers were notified yesterday via phone of the cancellations and that they lost their jobs after the morning shows.

I think this is just another sign that the public is increasingly looking to other forms of media for news. There are a lot of English-language radio stations that have also dropped their morning newscasts (and news in all other dayparts has been gone from virtually all music stations, save a handful in small and unrated markets, for well over a decade now), and a lot of television stations with no news programming.

What makes this news is that it is a company-wide policy decision, affecting all stations where they produce a local morning show, and the media company is predominantly Spanish-language.

I don't believe it advances the discussion to provide information on stations which did not already have morning shows or morning newscasts. While the two stations referenced are indeed owned by Entravision, the policy change obviously did not affect them.

It doesn't effect Tampa Bay. WVEA-TV doesn't even have a morning show, so no effect to me.

They got their cuts a couple months back when the local news production for Tampa was moved to Orlando.

It seems Entravision was only doing this in the first place in larger Hispanic media markets where it had a more established presence.
