ESPN acquires Super Bowl from CBS

....in Spanish

Just wrote an article about it. http://jmanmediazone.blogspot.com/2015/12/espn-acquires-super-bowl-from-cbs.html

I wonder why the game didn't go to CBSSN or Pop! or NFL Network rather than a rival's Spanish network?

Also wonder whether they'll use the same graphics and camera angles as CBS since Fox/Fox Deportes and NBC/NBC Universo do so and whether ESPN paid a rights fee or if CBS gets a cut of ad revenue.

By the way, this is the first Super Bowl aired on an ESPN network in the United States ever.

How long will it be before the ENGLISH version of the Super Bowl goes to cable? 5, 10 years? With MLB playoffs now on cable (think ALDS on FS1, NLDS on TBS), I wonder when the day will come.

That's why it's so important to invest in a platform. ESPN Deportes reaches more people than CBSSN, at least for now. So CBS gets a some money back for what it spent to acquire the rights, and the NFL gets viewers in homes it might not have had with CBSSN or any other option. It's all about reach. Who can reach the most homes? Broadcast beats cable. But certain cable channels have better reach with certain audiences. It costs money to make money, and when those costs exceed the returns, then it's best to take the easy money from someone else who is in a better position to make money. Everyone wins that way.

How long before ALL NFL games go to cable. I can't believe it hasn't happened already.

Considering what the NFL charges for rights, the networks want to maximize viewership. That still means OTA. The CBS, NBC, and Fox sports channels are still minor-league entities, not yet having the viewership of even ESPN, let alone the broadcast networks.

Besides, ESPN can't physically air up to 6 games simultaneously on a regional basis, even if Disney could afford the rights to one of the conferences.

Outsource it to ABC

They have to get permission from the NFL. That's what CBS did in this case.

Just because you paid for something doesn't mean you own it. They just paid for the right to sell it. Either to advertisers or to another entity, and it all has to be done with the permission of the NFL.

Which league pulls the trigger first and tries to sell their final game(s) to cable/dish? Of the Big Four, NHL. Big Three would be NBA. I think it would be too much backlash for the Superbowl or World Series.

At least 3 games of the Stanley Cup Finals are already on NBC Sports Network, depending on the day and teams involved.

... Which wouldn't happen if hockey earned any substantial ratings on NBC. It doesn't. The 2015 NBA finals on ABC had 3x the viewership (18.8m) of the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC (6.2m). Not counting a half million viewers of the NBA finals on WatchESPN.

One correction on my part: NBCSN airs two games of the SCF, not three. Games 3 and 4 aired there in 2015. Games 1, 2, 5, and 6 aired on NBC, as would a Game 7, but that hasn't happened since 2011.

Game 6 of last season's Blackhawks/Lightning SCF had a 4.4 rating and 8 million viewers. The ratings overall were higher than in previous years. Having the team who had won two of the previous 4 Finals didn't hurt.

Other years where they had decent ratings were when other top hockey markets were involved -- Boston, NY (Rangers only), Philly, Pittsburgh, Detroit. The LA Kings don't do as well -- sorry, but LA is just not a hockey market. Hockey will never get NFL or even NBA sized numbers, but they do well enough in the big eastern & Great Lakes markets that NBC covets -- which are conveniently NHL cities.

I assume it involves using the NFL International feed on that one, so it'll have the graphics those in Europe see. Also, it should be noted that CBS will still carry SAP Spanish over-the-air, as is required of all league partners except ESPN.

As for why not CBSSN or Pop...ESPN Deportes has a name and 'reach'. Even with Pop's near-default reach thanks to its TV Guide Network days, most people still don't know what Pop is, English or Spanish.

My mother may be one of the few who do. She watches Pop's 7:00p ET rebroadcast of that day's The Young and the Restless every weeknight (if she's not busy during the day [which isn't that often], she'll watch it on the Eye).

And Days of Our Lives @8PM !!!!!

And that's a nice thing about Pop. If the President holds yet another news conference on CBS, interrupting Y&R (which happens more often than you think in the west), Pop airs Young and the Restless without interruption later in the evening.

Wait... so ESPN wrestled the SAP rights away from CBS or will CBS still have audio on the secondary audio channel?
If CBS really lost all Spanish play-by-play for SB50 I hope CBS just pipes in the ambient crowd and field noise on SAP like they have in the past.

Less Simms = Win Win!

Well, this is interesting! I'll bet you that CBS will start its own Spanish language sports network in 2016. And let's remember that when the NHL goes up against a soccer match on Univision, Telemundo, ESPN Deportes or Fox Deportes, the soccer match will always win out, since the sport is popular amongst Latinos and those English speaking viewers who watch Spanish language games. When CBS has the Super Bowl in 2019, they'll have their own CBS Deportes Network, too.
