A Couple of Graveyard Catches

Thanks in part to some of crainbebo's posts, I'm gradulally beginning to see the appeal of DXing graveyard channels. A few nights ago, I hung out on 1240 for a while before sunrise and finally snagged a positive ID from WTAX from Springfield, IL. About 175 miles to my south-southwest. Actually I heard this one once before, but it's been at least 30 years. Then the next morning at just about the same time, I was on 1490 and eventually heard WKLQ from Whitehall, MI. Probably about 200 miles to my north-northeast.

Not all that impressive, but it's a start.
 
Well, again, that's a start! But obviously out in Illinois, there are a lot more co-channels on 1240 than in the west. The wide placement of towns in the Intermountain West and Northwest is why I get stations like KACH-1340 Preston, ID (530 miles) often. Still no WY yet on the graveyards, but did catch KSRR-1400 Provo, UT for a new log last month.

Exactly. On just about every graveyard channel at my location, it's possible to hear at least two stations during daylight hours. Either there's one in the background, or it's null one and get the other. 1240 is actually a case in point. WSBC (Chicago) dominates with a fair signal from about 40 miles to my southwest. But on a good car radio, WSDR from Sterling, Illinois is clearly audible underneath. WSDR is about 70-75 miles to my southwest. At home on most of my radios, I can null WSBC and hear WSDR's weaker signal emerge pretty much all alone.
