'The Meredith Vieira Show' To End After Two Seasons

The current second season of NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution’s The Meredith Vieira Show will be its last. After wrapping production on the daytime talk show, Vieira will segue to work on NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Meredith Vieira Show, hosted and executive produced by Vieira, launched in September 2014 and received a quick Season 2 renewal by its launch group, the NBC Owned Television Stations. After a solid ratings premiere, The Meredith Vieira Show lost steam as its freshman season progressed. It tried to shake things up in Season 2 with a new live format and the addition of panelists. After a shaky return — the Season 2 opener drew a 0.8 household rating and a 0.3 in women 25-54, down 50% and 40%, respectively, from the series debut, compounded by a number of time slot/station downgrades — The Meredith Vieira Show‘s ratings have ticked up and have been stable, averaging a 0.9 household rating and a 0.5 season to date. That is still below the established syndicated talkers, and with the challenging economics in daytime, it has proven difficult for recent high-profile new vehicles, like Katie, The Queen Latifah Show, and now The Meredith Vieira Show, to continue beyond their initial two-year carriage deals.

Vieira remains one of the most accomplished morning/daytime hosts with successful stints at The View, Today and the syndicated Who Wants To Be A Millionaire before headlining her own talk show. It is unclear what will succeed the show on the NBC stations.

And it looks as if NBC/Universal is getting out of Talk TV, at least with new shows anyway. They have offered no replacement for the Meredith Vieira Show, and the NBC O&O's won't even let the show play out in reruns. A 4pm newscast is set to begin in late May bumping Steve Harvey up to 2pm, and Ellen to 3pm.

I think Meredith killed her own show by adding that roundtable "What's Hot Now" junk at the beginning of the episodes. She didn't have that in the first season. Plus, It didn't really fit with Meredith (being 62 yrs old). However, Ellen DeGeneres is 58 and she loves the pop music celebrities, and the talented kids, and giving away prizes and cash. Her audience is mostly in that 18-34 bracket, with some 35-54.
Wonder how Chris Harrison is doing with both The Bachelor and Millionaire now. Whenever I can catch him, he is MUCH better than Terry Crews or Cedric the Entertainer...talk about a trainwreck!

That means KIMA has to replace it with yet ANOTHER show at 9AM. They've gone through America's Court, Anderson (and Anderson Live), The Test and now Meredith Vieira, in just about 6 years. Wonder if they will take this new Harry Connick Jr. talk show.

Weird, because my ABC affilliate WCVB replayed her show long after she was cancelled and all throughout the summer at the graveyard time slot of 1:05 AM. A coincidence, maybe?

My affiliate remedied the situation by shoving Ellen to Meredith's old slot at 3 PM, Inside Edition at 4 PM, and a 2 1/2 hour local news. Can't get more annoying than that! :(

NBC 30 has been running reruns of Merideth and Steve Harvey at 2:05AM and 3:05AM respectively. When NBC 30 launched its 4PM Newscast in June, Steve Harvey slid back from 3PM to 2PM and Ellen from 4PM to 3PM. With the reruns of Merideth and Steve continuing in the same overnight time slots. "Harry" will be airing at 1PM on NBC 30 replacing Access Hollywood Live.

KIMA continues to run reruns at 9AM. They are replacing her with Harry Connick Jr. a couple weeks from now, but since Sinclair runs KIMA's master control from outside Yakima (maybe at KOMO's studios?) KIMA can't just screw with the schedule...

WOTV is replacing The Meredith Vieira show with Harry Connick JR. at 3PM. WOTV replaced Steve Harvey for Meredith show back in 2014 as Steve Harvey moved to WWMT in the fall of 2014.

KSTP ABC Minneapolis is replacing it with Right This Minute (which is shown now late nights on KARE11 NBC)
