KQRP 92.9, Log Cabin, Texas

There's a low power FM station actually assigned to Malakoff, Texas. They air classic country and do Malakoff high school sports.

They have a website: http://www.logcabincountry.com/

What got me on to this station was I heard a rumor they might go silent or to another format. I have visited the website in the past and now notice the call letters and dial position are gone from the website, to support that rumor.

I know it would be a pretty tough market. The radio dial is pretty tight in that area. The 60 dbu only reaches half of Malakoff. From my guess, the 50 dbu reach might be about 14,000. There's not a ton of businesses in the listening area, supposing most go to Athens or other places. Still KQRP would reach several lake communities nicely.

How are they doing? Anyone know? Did they go silent or change format.

By the way they have a nice looking studio. I was impressed. I wish them sell. It looked like a good concept!

I can update things. The station is simulcasting one of the Livingston, Texas LPFMs. The former format of classic country with high school sports is now exclusively online as Log Cabin Country. It seems the big draw financial was high school sports with online listening. It is very typical for high school sports sponsors to make up a majority of ad dollars in small town radio.

I really don't know. It was there a couple of weeks ago.

I know when I looked for the KQRP website, I'd find a link, click on it and a page told me to click on logcabincountry.com. I'd get the website at that point. You are right, it is not there.

As I understand things, the LPFM may have not brought in the revenue versus expenses but the website did. I gather it was high school sports that brought in the cash and most of high school sports listening was online, so the operator centered on that with his classic country music stream 24/7 online. I hope his plan worked and he didn't shut the online station down. You could tell he did a fine job on the music programming. It was perfect for the area. Hopefully he'll pop up again. I suppose the website provider might be the issue. It's all speculation here.

Meanwhile, as I understand things, possibly KXAX in Livingston is being simulcast over KQRP.

As a side note: it is okay for a LPFM to rebroadcast another LPFM if the agreement is worded properly to disallow the simulcasting station to have 'control' of the station, from what I'm told. The obvious loophole would be for programming to be from a programming service provider. By this I mean, you start a station and hook up to the EWTN feed or you become a client of, say, Westwood One, for example.

Website looks like it got taken down. Have they completely signed off now B-Turner?

KQRP-LP is on the air. They are apparently running Malakoff HS sports non-stop, 24/7. When I listened they were airing a broadcast of a football game from October, which then went straight into another Malakoff football game re-broadcast. The next day when I tuned in, they were airing yet another Malakoff HS game from October.

Well that's certainly an interesting programming choice. I wonder if that is for paying the bills or just keeping the license active.

From what I know of the station, like many small town stations, high school sports is where the money is. I suspect the country format they offered wasn't pulling the revenue after the football season was over. As I recall they let the LPFM in Livingston run their format on the station, likely Livingston was paying the actual expenses. I presume that arrangement ended and they're running non-stop football games to keep the license alive at this point. That would be what I speculate.

They filed a notification to go silent.

"WHILE KQRP-LP HAS A DECENT AMOUNT OF LISTENERS, WE ARE FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO FIND UNDERWRITERS TO COVER OUR OPERATING EXPENSES, AND HAVE FALLEN SHORT OF THE FUNDS REQUIRED TO KEEP THE STATION ON THE AIR. WE ARE REQUESTING A 90 DAY SILENT STA TO GIVE US AMPLE TIME TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION WHILE PRESERVING THE LICENSE."

I am speculating here.

I notice their website is gone. If they have high school sports, there are sports happening now, so the website would be up for out of area fans to hear games. I'm guessing the school district might have allowed a different station to air the high school sports. Like many small towns, LPFM or not, high school sports is a major windfall financially. Since the bulk of the Underwriting would be for sports, I suspect he lost the rights to high school sports.

The station in the past had carried the programming of a Livingston, Texas Low Power FM at one time. This would have been done because of little income for non-sports programming. Yes, it is legal to do in much the same way it is legal for a pair of Catholic LPFMs to both carry EWTN programming.

I imagine the guy might be interested in transferring the license to another non-profit. The question is if there is someone locally who might be willing to reimburse some percentage of KQRP's expenses to obtain the license. LPFMs cannot be sold for profit but they can recover their expenses. That he filed an STA shows he has integrity as a broadcaster.

He has a sweet set up and I have spoken to him by phone. He seems like a really nice guy.

I just read on the LPFMDatabase Facebook page that this station is back on the air as of June 1st.

An STA is good for 6 months. Mr. Scott is an honorable broadcaster, so I have no doubts he got KQRP going again. Earlier he was trying to find someone to take over the station. I'm just guessing, but I doubt if he transferred the station to another group he'd want the studio and tower on his property and that might have been why it has not transferred. You'd need to move it and offer something for the equipment. From what I gather he took a full time gig at a nearby station and likely didn't have the cash left over from his paycheck to keep the station running. If he's still trying to find a group to take the station, it is a sweet deal given the crowded radio dial and his coverage area.
