CKLW

CKLW dropped Kim Komando on Saturdays. In the past year they also dropped Clark Howard. Two high quality shows that are no longer cleared in the Detroit market.

I can't advise as to the specific ratings for that timeslot. CKLW gets minimal ratings in Detroit, so I'm sure these nationally syndicated programs from the US pay for carriage on the station to be able to claim they are cleared in the Detroit market. The replacement show is also US based, so the Canadian angle is the issue.

I've not known of Cox to pay anyone for clearance (in the case of Clark Howard). I don't know what timeslot he was in; I also didn't know Marilu Henner had a radio show. Looks like they sold a couple of informercials in the evening with Joy Browne otherwise.

I don't know that any of these were paying for clearance, I just suggested it might have been a possibility. He was in the timeslot that Joy Browne has now. She was moved from mornings to make room for Marilu Henner. For some reason, Frank removed the mention of her show from my initial post. When that move happened, Clark Howard was dropped. Those other shows cut a half hour from Howard back then as well.

My foggy memory is recalling that they were Dial Global. Anyway, I doubt anyone paid the formerly Big 8 for clearance. CKLW has got to be the last Joy Brown affiliate standing. THey've had her since they went talk I think. Apparently she's just fill when they can't sell an infomercial in the evenings now

Could these shows be distributed by a Canadian syndicator? CKLW doesn't amount to much in Detroit, but it usually has very good ratings in Windsor itself.

That's what led me to think they had approached CKLW to pay for clearance. Even if it amounts to little in Detroit, if it is cleared, even in Windsor, they can claim the show is cleared in an additional major market. CKLW has the added complexity of needing a certain amount of Canadian content, so when they air these syndicated shows they need to think how well they'll either sell in Windsor, where the bulk of their audience is against how much difference in the return if they air Canadian content. I'm not sure there are all that many Canadian produced syndicated radio programs. Kim Komando and The Money Pit would play reasonably well, I think, in both Windsor or Detroit for local ad buys. However, I think Clark Howard is far easier to sell than Marilu Henner or Joy Browne, yet they dropped him to accommodate those shows. Perhaps those shows fare well in Windsor and that is what drove the decision.

Syndicated shows are barter deals. If the station doesn't get US audience, then it's of no use to US advertisers. Some US syndicators have deals with Canadian distributors who sell to Canadian advertisers. That could be the situation here. As I've said, I don't know who syndicates these shows, but if they don't have a Canadian sales rep, they could have pulled them from the station.
