1400 mile FM skip - on a car radio!

Coming in on 92.5 in Houston, TX: XHRM Tijuana at 4:30 PM 1-22-16 - "Magic 92.5, the beat of San Diego" - sophisticated mix of R&B oldies, smooth jazz, and current R&B. Receiver - Pioneer Supertuner 3D in car with 31 inch whip.
 
Ehh no biggie..in the summer of 2000, 97.1 KEGL Dallas was heard by a driver north of Toronto CA for over 2 hours...got a signal report from him and had promotions send him some free bribo....he loved it!
 
Congrats. The TX-CA path was open for about an hour this afternoon - a DXer in Austin, TX also received Caborca, SON on 89.9.

There was also the day the sky opened up over central Florida about 20 years ago. Every FM frequency had multiple stations on it, switching wildly from one to another. So much skip that getting an ID from any of them was difficult. Starting at the bottom of the band, I got an ID from KTXT 88.1, Lubbock. That took enough time I didn't even get to 88.3 before I got home. Too much of a good thing that day. But KTXT was close to 2000 miles.
 
This sort of thing is also quite common in West Texas, when a dry line sets up. Los Angeles stations begin booming in like locals, as long as you are directly under the line. One day when I had time on my hands, I would park in gas stations in little towns along highway 114. When the dry line moved on and the stations faded, I would just drive to the next town under the dry line and get them back. Very dependable way to log most of the Los Angeles stronger FMs.
 
At the end of December, there was a really nice E-skip opening that brought stations in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida booming into southern New England. I heard WAAC Valdosta, GA (92.9) coming in like a local for a good 20 minutes.
 
I actually have never heard FM skip myself, yet. (The farthest I've done so far on FM is a little over 200 miles, hearing KVYB in the San Diego area, a semi-regular occurrence.) Maybe I'm listening to the wrong frequency at the wrong time? Also I've heard things about exceptional distances, multi-hop, F-layer skip, but supposedly it's rare. But would it theoretically be possible to hear an east Asian or Australian FM station in Southern California?
 
Bruce, you are confusing miles with kilometers. KTXT is 2030 kilometers...but 1260 miles from Orlando.
Stephen (Pianoplayer) I don't believe it is theoretically possible to hear east Asia or Australia on FM. Sure, transoceanic FM skip has happened (6/26/2009 was an example - Northern Ireland's Paul Logan received 94.1 WYSP Philadelphia, 97.3 WENJ in New Jersey, and 90.7 WVAS Montgomery, AL, the farthest distance at over 4,000 miles. That's triple-hop skip and has only happened once other than that.)
You are most likely listening at the wrong time. California was actually quite dry last year (2015) for e-skip, however, I did receive a nice opening early on June 21st into Los Angeles, and then San Diego up to 100.7 KFMB. KIFM, KSON, KMYI and KSSX were all in. Also XHHIT 95.3 (La Caliente). Use the TVFM Skip Log (DXworld.com/tvfmlog.html) to check for skip...there is usually a few people in the Southwest who log on there once in a while.

I'd say it's a real biggie!

Especially considering the distance, not to mention the time of year.
