102.7 The Beach - A Month and a Half Later

What does everything think of The Beach a month and a half later? I'm still not convinced that the music is all that different from Magic. I like the fact that it has local jocks, but was it really worth getting rid of Heritage jocks like Mindy Lang in order to have Kenny Walker on the air? Kenny is a great jock, but Magic already had an outstanding lineup.

Joe, Mindy, Vance, Eric, Tom, Gnarly and more are online now like most of the world.

I think it sounds very different. Almost no 70's, and a severely restricted playlist of about 300+ songs that
are played over and over again. The station has no real special features like AT 40: the 80's, Tom Kent's music
magazine, Beatle Brunch. Even if you really like all the songs, and some of them weren't really big hits, it
wouldn't take long to get sick of them. I think, if "she" refers to the station, that they've gone from
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" to "She Drives Me Crazy". It will be interesting to see how they
do in the ratings. The ones from last month really rated before they switched on January 1.

Not much difference to my ears. I've heard "Beach" play an occasional 60's song and quite a few 70's songs. Agree. Why fire the heritage jocks? it's not that easy to listen to heritage oldies in South Florida. Even 590 in Belle Grade is 70's-80's. They are on 590AM. You would think they would skew older. Only place to hear older oldies on terrestrial radio is on Sunday nights when Ken Held leases three hours to run his Doo wop show, which of course ran for years on 102.7

The station was around 15th in 25-54 during the tail end of 2015 (excluding the meaningless Holiday book).

The January book is out next Tuesday. Based on the first three weeks, it looks like they will break into the top 10 in the sales demo.

How much of that is the curiosity factor? Can they maintain?

Considering that there was solid week to week growth after the Holiday book, the station looks very solid. Curiosity will not sustain the TSL levels needed to make any impact on the PPM.

The music is very different from Magic. Most of the 60's are gone. Most of the 70's are Rhythmic titles. Some Marley for the beach theme, and 80's Miami titles (Expose, Company B, Miami Sound Machine, Nice & Wild, Noel). Most of the 80's titles have a strong pop/dance lean.

Many variations of a pop, dance, 80's station have been tried (and failed) in South Florida. I think they finally found the right mix.

I see the ratings, and revenue improving.

Hi, David. What was their ultimate rank in the sales demo? Is that info readily available to non-professionals? Thanks.

Allaccess.com usually has 18-34 and 25-54 rankings, and registration is simple.

WMXJ was 9th in 25-54. Nice improvement over last year's below-15th performance.

They're down? What is wrong with this market! This station is beyond awesome, music wise at least. Geez! Who's doing the ratings, a microwave dish? A child holding a tape recorder?

With WMIA in the picture as far as playing 80s Rhythmic titles, it'll be interesting to see see how much of a effect they will have on The Beach.

The overall ratings are slightly down in the latest update today. How did they do in the sales demo this time?

4.3 to a 4.2 in 25-54, in other words flat at the highest level they have been at in a long time.

MIA will pull women and Hispanic listeners from the Beach. It will be interesting how much of a impact that will have.

Less than six months and wiped away from the website. Read all about it HERE on All Access. Let the speculations begin. Right now, John O'Connell, the PD for the Shark keeps an eye on things.

All Access on top of things. No other websites, not even Radio Insight, reporting this one.

WMXJ-FM goes from a 4.3 in the Holiday 15 book, to a 4.0, and now, as of March, a 3.9?

The programming is wacky. No wonder ratings are flat. All the upheaval of firings, image change, etc. for what?

Listening on a Saturday: Quiet Riot's "Come on Feel the Noize" into Yaz "Situation?" Tune in later: "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns n' Roses into . . . Bob Marley's "Jammin?" What?

What's worse, being sick of hearing "Welcome to the Jungle" (the "Foxy Lady" of the 2000s), I punch up Big 106, who is also playing "Welcome to the Jungle" at the SAME TIME, in sync with The Beach 102.7. But while The Beach seg'd into Marley, Big seg'd into a Rolling Stones cut, which makes a hell of a lot more sense.

Quiet Riot into Yaz? Guns and Roses into Marley? I haven't experienced such a jarring transition since I was forced to play a Joan Baez cut into a new Deep Purple tune because the index card file box told me to play it. I enjoy Marley as much as the next guy, and he's iconic, but what is the deal with Entercom and all the Marley tunes on not only the Beach, but on the Shark? They simply do not fit.

And it's so repetitive. Tina Turner and Whitney each had one song, Mellencamp maybe two. No Huey Lewis. Shout at least every other day. And I'd like to.
