Atsc 3.0

I was reading about the next phase of broadcast television. From what I see this will be the carrier of the new Ultra HD 4K or 2160p picture quality. I also read that instead of using one transmitter to broadcast an entire coverage area, the signal will be broadcast from cell towers through wireless internet. This makes total sense. I guess my question is how long before this comes to Atlanta and the rest of the country and will they simulcast the old ATSC system and how long before the old system gets cut off?

AFAIK, it's still being tested. It would obsolete a lot of older HD receivers (those that can't upgrade their system software to decode it, even though it would still be displayed in 720p or 1080i after an upgrade). It would also have to get the blessings of the cable and satellite companies, who only have so much room for channels. Broadcast transmitters would have to be upgraded. Good luck stuffing a 2160p signal into a 6 MHz channel, especially those stations with subchannels.

Besides, how much programming, other than movies, require 2160p?
