CHR in Greenville Spartenburg

I was in Greenville a few weeks ago and was scanning around the dial, trying to find a CHR station. IMHO, GSP has no such animal!

I found hot 98.1, calling itself "Carolina's #1 Hit Music Station" but it was really more urban.

Then I discovered B93.7. But based on the music and jocks, it really more sounded like a hot AC. It really didn't have the energy that a typical CHR would have. Supa Dave, the midday guy, barely said anything in the hour or so I was tuned in. Hawk & Tom, although I'm sure does well for the station, didn't seem to "fit" on a CHR.

Where's the Z100 (NY) KIIS (LA) Y100 (Miami) type station in Greenville/Spartenburg? Yawn! Does CHR, real mainstream CHR, not work in the market?

I don't know. B93.7 used to be more mainstream, but fluctuates all the time. I'm actually surprised to here you say it sounded like a Hot AC. IMO, it's been veering more rythmnic lately. With Entercom's new "The Block" urban station, however, maybe it will move back towards the center.

All that said, if I want to listen to CHR, I almost always try to listen to 96.1 or 95.1 in Charlotte. Both are far better CHR stations that what we have in the Upstate and, typically, they can be picked up in the Greenville area (96.1 better than 95.1).

Both 96.1 and 95.1 get a decent signal in most parts of Greenville in the car. But if you connect rabbit ears to a home radio receiver, you get strong clear reception. And my attic antenna will consistently lock onto the HD. Hopefully they won´t allow some other new rogue low power signal to come along and interfere. I am still infuriated about the annoying interference with WLNK on 107.9. It has gotten worse since the late summer, and is almost impossible to listen to in the car unless you have an HD Radio. But fortunately I get it clear on the home radio with the same rabbit ears, including the HD. Used to be WLNK had the strongest signal from Charlotte. Now there is mutual interference with WXRU, who also has a bad signal. Someone should complain to the FCC about this translator interference emerging in many markets.

For some reason the past month I can no longer get a lock on the HD Radio signal from Channel 96.1. I am not sure if there is adjacent channel interference from 95.9 or 96.3 translator signals, or if those channels had increased their power. I have tried with rabbit ears, as well as the good attic antenna. Seems like more failure to protect fringe reception of distant signals. But at least their analog sounds very good, as 96.1 has excellent audio processing.

Translator interference indeed again seems to be the culprit here with fringe reception in the car. As 95.1 is now prone to static interference from 94.9 in certain areas around Greenville, whereas it used to be clear. And 96.1-HD will no longer lock on my home receiver, probably due to 95.9 or 96.3. So Charlotte CHR reception is now a bit problematic in certain areas, as the FCC has not adequately protected full power stations in distant areas.

Sadly, I've noticed this too for both 95.1 and 96.1. I find the Charlotte stations to be more adult leaning than B93.7 here in Greenville and it is a loss to this area IMO.

With B leaning more rhythmic and Hot already having an Urban lean, this area is ripe for a better CHR station for a more adult audience.

With MY in the dumpster with Hot AC, I think it would be a prime flip to go to a full on CHR leaning more adult with a full imaging change. Even as a Hot AC they sound stale with too much 90s and songs that really don't belong on Hot AC.

CHR may be a better route. It couldn't do much worse.

entercom would be smart to move hawk and tom to 98.9 with more adult music and find a more youthful morning show for 93.7 if that is their audience.

I don't get it but it seems that kids/teens actually LIKE Hawk and Tom. I know my kids do and their friends talk about torture Tuesday and all that crap.

The thing is that the target of a CHR station is not teens; it is primarily 18-34 women, followed by 25-44 women.

Well I still get 95.1 and 96.1 clear on my home radios, but the HD for 96.1 will no longer lock on. Although I do get 95.1-HD to lock on. But in the car, it is analog only, and unfortunately those signals are now subject to static in certain areas, as a result of all these newly emerging translator signals creating interference. And I am still amazed they allowed a LPFM on 107.9, whereas WLNK once had a strong and clear signal in the car. Now it is more limited to clear reception on a home receiver only.

Ironically, there is an iHeartMedia CHR licensed to Fletcher, NC (WQNQ-FM 104.3) which serves Asheville. But, weird that it's only 470 Watts! Seems like iHeart would want to cover the entire GSP market and compete with B as well as Hot. Any thoughts on this?

That is odd. Know what kind of lean it has? What this market needs is a more straight CHR without an urban/rhythmnic lean.

MY may be getting closer but it's still firmly in Hot AC territory to me (more of the crunchy borderline adult alternative stuff, but still mixing in the Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift stuff as well).

I don't actually know but it started out Hot AC.

As for why it doesn't have much of a signal, It was a small station licensed to Old Fort that didn't really reach Asheville and probably wasn't supposed to. It simulcast another station for a while and went back to doing its own music when it got the stronger signal.

WQNQ is only 470 watts because it is a Class A that's 1145 feet above average terrain. Class A stations are supposed to be local, the equivalent of 3000 watts at 330 feet. But since the Asheville area is so mountainous, the transmitter is on a high elevation so it must similarly decrease power. NYC FMs are Class B. They only run 6000 watts but they're on top of the Empire State Building. That's the equivalent of 50,000 watts on a 500 foot tower.

WQNQ is a straight up chr. No definite lean but it's pretty rhythmic although that represents the current top 40 chart.

But if WHQC and WQNQ were side by side WHQC is more adult friendly. WQNQ is a run of the mill iheart top 40 that you find in small and mid markets that eventually plays all the hits but is slower with more adult top 40 songs than rhythmic product. WMKS in the Triad and WNOK in Columbia would be decent comparisons
