KLCK 98.9 Turning to FM Sports

I don't know how true this is, but I just heard that Click 98.9 will be switching over to a FM Sports in two weeks. From what it sounded like, there were some talk of bringing in some big names in the sports arena and there was definitely some money that was going to be spent. Personally, I like the idea only because I'm a big sports junkie and I'd love to see the Seattle area on the map with something big like this.

I couldn't pick up completely what was being said, but it sounded like plans were in the works 23rd of this month.

Has anyone heard anything else?

OK, I'll bite.

Always interesting when an account is created to spread a fun rumor. Could be a Hubbard employee spreading a bit of agitprop in front of a "surprise" format change to classic or active rock. Or a former Hubbard employee in need of a good hug.

Nice use of "Bell" in the alias there Alex. Tip of the hat to the Bellevue location of HQ, perhaps? Maybe your initials are A.L and you are are "ex-Bell" employee, hmmm? Where is Marc Hubbard when we need him/her?

That being said, someone should take Click out behind the woodshed and put a #1 with a bullet right through the eyes. What an awful station...I kept trying to listen to it, and for brief moments in it's history there seemed to be a bit of promise. Then they would "adjust" the format back into the all-Adele station. Final straw for me was the "new" song a couple weeks ago- SOB by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats. Was released mid summer last year. So not new. Been on The End so long it probably is considered "gold." And they edited out the word "bitch" which is kind of the point of the whole song. Yeah, you really know how to build your musical cred there, Click. Fuuuuuu.....

I'm not sure what big names are out there, unless Mother Hubbard is intent on stealing away either talent or Net affiliation from one of the other three Seattle sports stations. NBC and Yahoo Sports Radio are kind of at the bottom of the sports talker food chain. KIRO has the Mariners and Seahawks locked in with them for the foreseeable future. But I guess they can give it a go at being Seattle's 4th sports station.

Not Trying to Be Abrasive

Well I'm not certain what I can do about my name, Coyote, but I am certainly not here to stir the pot. I'll admit, that it seems a bit strange with a new account popping up, but I moved to Queen Anne about 3 years ago to study full stack web development. I'm now contracting through Microsoft for Amazon and unless radio is going to pay me Microsoft money, I'll stay away from full-time radio. And yes, I did have an account on this forum as 2birds years back and used it to read the forums, but got rid of it because of the abrasiveness. Please don't make me think it's still like this.

Regardless, I'd love it if we had a station like that here because I'd go down and see if they could use a part timer. Sports talk is a small passion of mine and I'd like to try and do some weekends at least. If not I just love the idea of an FM sports talk. I listen to Fox Sports Radio, but I hate that it's on AM. It's not riveting sport talk radio to me, but it's really my only choice other than ESPN radio online--which bugs me because I burn through battery on my phone.

I was hoping to just come back and see that things have changed, but it looks like they haven't. All I know is that when I'm sitting down enjoying my meal with my girlfriend, the conversation I heard was an earshot away. I was even hesitant to bring this conversation here to be ridiculed. :\

Regardless, I don't know anything really about Click and it really isn't my type of music. I won't hate on how they run their station because all I care about is a having an FM sports talk station. I don't really care about the drama behind 98.9 and would rather put my energy into something that might benefit the city.

If it's worth anything, Coyote, you did amuse me by breaking down the iterations of my name. Hah! Thanks.

I really think that an FM station would do great here. But if they are going to go FM, I would imagine they are dumping a ton of money into the talent. Why not pick the best to be the best--and on an bigger signal!?

I just saw this from one of the other threads:

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/92766/brooke-jubal-get-syndicated-to-portland/

You can't tell me that something is going on with Hubbard because they now have their sister station's morning show syndicated in Portland now? I'm beginning to think it's true that 98.9 will turn sports.

That's old news. What's new news is that B&J are now syndicated. However, that means nothing to 98.9.

I don't see the logic in FM sports. KIRO-AM has the Seahawks and Mariners locked up. KOMO has the Huskies. KJR has nothing and the ratings show it. What do you do with a FM sports station - clear one of the networks not heard here?

Then again, we're talking Marc Kaye here...

I'm sure NBC Sports wants a Seattle affiliate. IMHO that's why KLCK is going for sports.
Click was not a very good station. Without warning, they came on in late 2010 replacing the long time smooth jazz format. No announcements, no "we are switching in two weeks, KWJZ is going to HD-2," nothing. And smooth jazz never went to 98.9's HD subchannels (it was on KKWF's HD2 for a brief period, and now on a noisy 1560 AM signal, KZIZ)
The format was just a mess. Sounded like Star 101.5, but when they are having a trainwreck. Mix that with a couple of KRWM and a couple of KNDD songs, plus a few ex-Mountain overplayed songs and that's Click.

I think a better launch date for this new FM Sports station would be April 1st. Hmm I'm afraid to say what my ultimate sports April 1st joke would be. Getting Iheart, CBS, and Bonneville in on the joke might be a tough sell.

I'd think if any Hubbard station go's sports (NBC), it would be KIXI 880. Aren't they on life support anyway?

UPDATE: Hmmm... Just looked at radio insight, and Lance has posted an announcement about an FM sports talker coming to Seattle. It's for his premium members...I don't subscribe to his site, so I can't read it. :(

Do we really need another sports station? KLCK will become the fourth in-market, and don't forget KRKO and KHHO which are also doing sports.

Interesting format choice. But If they're not hooked to a major sports network, they're going to have to create programming locally, which is actually pretty good if Hubbard is so benevolent.

Stay tuned....(Finally, they're playing "That's Life")

A lineup can be cobbled together out of offerings from various syndicators. Since advertisers will buy sports no matter how weak the overall numbers of the station are, whether the lineup has any star quality or broad appeal doesn't mean a thing, so long as the few people who do tune in are in the coveted young male money demo.

Apologies, Alex. It just seemed a bit suspicious.

I still think they will go classic or active rock. Applied for new calls, KVRQ. Which seem "rockish."

It's cool, Coyote. I would have done the same thing too. Thank you for understanding.

You make a good point. But Isn't KZOK already classic rock and wouldn't KISW be the active rock station? I don't want to look too much into the call letters as a giveaway. Do stations still rely on call letters to be a part of their station's identity outside of legal purposes?

I just have my heart set on sports based what I heard yesterday. Now I'm afraid I'm going to be "that" guy if I'm wrong.

Correct. There is one of each. KZOK has a ton of listeners so might be a nice place to attack. KISW is less than fully dedicated to Active Rock- basically a talk station in AM and PM drive. I think there is some low hanging fruit to be picked there.

Hubbard has a fair number of Active and Classic rock stations in their FM stable. They DO have one FM Sports station, but most of their sports formats are on AM. I also wonder if the sports would go on 880- they have dipped their toe in with Gonzaga basketball broadcasts already on KIXI recently. And every time you hear an ambulance that's one fewer KIXI listener.

Since SOMEONE has to say this to make the thread official- 6AM Monday the New Q99 debuts with Robin and Maynard playing "Kokomo." Crow and West afternoons. Etc.
