Updates on News Personalities

It appears that Tyler Baldwin is gone from 3TV. His bio is gone from the station website.

Also, I just realized that Dave Cherry is no longer with CBS5. I'm not sure how long he's been gone, but he bio has also disappeared from the station website.

I guess a certain amount of consolidation was expected.

Double Wow.

I would say Tyler Baldwin got a promotion from weekend morning anchor to secondary sports anchor behind Tim Ring. I thought Baldwin was okay teamed with Tess Rafols on Saturday/Sunday and brought some passion to his reports.

At the time, I thought Dave Cherry was a good steal from 12 News/AZ Republic. Wonder what happened or was it just consolidation?

From Tyler Baldwin twitter: I am the newest Sales Hunter @Paychex #Excited (Feb 26) and another post from 3/14 thanking those who came to the goodbye dinner.

Dave Cherry's twitter account still shows him at CBS5 including a post at 7:00am on 3/15/2016.

My mistake on Dave Cherry. For some reason, he is not in the bios section on their website and I haven't seen any promos for him in the last few weeks. At first, he was constantly being promoted. It finally looked like they had updated both the 3TV and CBS5 websites, but of course it must be difficult to keep those bios and pics updated.

Dave is not listed on the "Meet the Team" page but does show up on the CBS5 Advocate (but no link to his bio). A name search for Dave Cherry does have a direct link to the bio page.

Yes, you are right. But we do have to be careful about doing searches, because it is not always definitive. When someone leaves the station, the bio is often removed but the profile may still be there behind the scenes. Again, I wonder what is so difficult about keeping an up-to-date bio list on the station website.

Interesting career jump into payroll/HR business for Tyler Baldwin. Have to wonder if consolidation and the constant ownership uncertainty over there wrung him out.

They haven't updated everyone's bio on KTVK's website...Javier Soto's bio still says he reports from Flagstaff, when he's been in Phoenix for going on 9 years.

Potentially better pay? Better hours (weekday rather than weekend evenings)? I always liked Tyler better than Ryan O'Donnell on weekend GMAZ, but I understand that the tv grind can get old after years of doing it.

Or perhaps Tyler's contract was up and Meredith felt that they don't need 4 sports anchor/reporters.

Maybe he felt that he was the odd man out. When you consider the combined KTVK/KPHO sports department with Tim Ring, Mark McClune and Joe Pequeno all having spent a number of years covering sports and Tyler just moving into the role in the past few years. If they decided to reduce the staff, he probably would have been "on the beach". Tyler is from AZ and has a family so maybe he was growing tired of the media rat race and found something that would keep him "home".

I am familiar with the previous work of Time Ring and Joey P, but what is Mark McClune's history in this market?

Mark (aka Mr. April Warnacke) was Sports Director in Eugene and Spokane before moving to Arizona in 2006. He worked at Fox Sports AZ covering all the local sports teams before joining CBS 5.

Thanks! I didn't realize Mark was "Mr. April Warnecke". So, I guess Mark has been here a year or so longer than Tyler. According to LinkedIn, Tyler started in 2007. As a sports anchor, I thought Tyler was better than Mark -- more commanding presence which is very appropriate for sports. Unfortunately, Mark comes across very plain vanilla in my opinion (others may differ).

I tried to watch Varsity Zone last night. Wow, I really miss Tyler Baldwin. Joey P. almost put me to sleep. He seemed unprepared for a 30 minute show and was very monotone compared to Tyler.
