KFOG stays AAA with new PD Bryan Schock

Following the exit of Jim Richards last month, Cumulus Media has hired Brian Schock as new OM/PD at KFOG (and KSAN) too.

Schock most recently served as interim PD/MD of AAA 102.1 KPRI San Diego, which unfortunately was sold last year. He has also programmed two legendary San Diego stations: alternative “91X” and classic rock (like KSAN) KGB. Bryan was the first on-air host and Music Director at AAA 101.9 WRXP New York when it launched in 2009, so it looks like KFOG is thankfully in good hands.

Dunno ... sounds like they're blowing it up. No 10@10 today, just regular music and lots of mysterious promos for "The Evolution... it's coming!"

Blowing it up? Given this hire, I'm not sure if an all-out blow up is likely. Though it does sound like at the very least a rebranding could be on the way. Maybe they're gonna flip it to Alternative and take on Live, though I'm not sure why Cumulus would want to do that.

At this time we know that the entire air staff has been let go (Cumulus also doing a mass firing at KGO, BTW). According to a certain local blogger, Live 105 is not long for this world, and if he's right about that then Cumulus wants "The Evolution" to be SF's New Alternative, I suppose.

Would Cumulus really put on an Alternative (even though the new PD has previous Alternative experience) and pull that off when Heritage KITS is on the verge of giving up on the format? Also no way they go with "The Evolution" branding as there is already a 92.7 "The Revolution" in SF. Rumor is Armstrong and Getty to Mornings at KGO. Was their contract up at iHeart?

No, they're still on the iHeart payroll.

The A&G show will originate from their studios in Sacramento. Their parent station is (and will continue to be) KSTE in Sacramento.

It was a good run. I grew up listening to KFOG. I remember when they picked up the 97.7 signal in San Jose. What a shame. Cumulous has been running both stations into the ground for the last few years.

The previous ownership seemed obsessed with the country format, and bored with everything else. So they did nothing, especially with regards to KGO. This new ownership says it's turning over decisions to the local management to improve ratings and revenues. We'll see how that approach works.

According to their website and the drops on the station, the "Evolution" happens on 4/20. Perhaps they switch to all Marley radio as a stunt? It's sad that the AAA format doesn't fly in the Bay Area. At least there are other AAA stations that are available online.

I realize this may sound stupid but what if they use KFOG to simulcast KGO? Crazier stuff has happened in BA radio.

Horrible idea, IMO. Wouldn't that be wasting a perfectly good FM signal to simulcast a format that's way past it's "use by" date?

I tend to agree with you. Just was curious since they got blown up on the same day.

Maybe they'll launch a country station? We've all seen how successful country is in San Francisco. :)

Yes. There's been "The Bear" and "The Wolf." May I suggest "The Warthog."

The Cumulus country brand, NASH, failed recently in the South Bay, so... no, that's not gonna happen.
