1550 WZUM

Chuck reports he plans to keep WZUM. He mention he might change WYZR to WZUM-FM. No promises on that one as I don't think much thought has gone into the WZUM-FM possible change. Time will tell.
My guess is the FM will not be in the air until later this summer. Chuck is still in the equipment purchasing mode. I believe he has a signed tower lease.
You are getting your wish. We switch at noon so listen before noon on Saturday to hear your request. It will be the last song we play before making the switch.
Thanks for your comment. Before this thread was created, the station was mentioned in other threads. Usually not in a good way. For many years, no one listened to 1550 so it was a waste of time and energy. When Stephen and I purchased the station it was in receivership due to the owner's assets being frozen by the SEC and no one wanted it. Everything from the purchase to now is online so I will not repeat it. As for this thread, it wasn't my intention to create it. My first posts were a result of my excitement of having the "Heart and Soul of Pittsburgh" programming on the air. It just continued from there.
This message board is how I met Clarke and gave him the opportunity to do the format. This message board is how the last song was selected. It wasn't a one way communications device. I just thought about what I typed. It influenced the beginning and the end.
I have seen posts on another discussion board criticizing the thread but I felt no one was being force to read it. It gave members of this website direct access to the owner and operator of the station as well to Clarke Ingram who designed the format. I love radio and I wish other stations would let us fans of radio take a peek inside their operation. With more than 43 thousand views, I'm guessing others liked knowing what was happening inside a small radio station. I am happy to know you enjoyed it.

The R&B Oldies version of WZUM has now passed into the history books, after a little less than three years. I had wanted to prove that this format could work, even on an AM station, and it did. We got both listeners and (yep) ratings; we turned nothing into something; in the dark world of AM revitalization, we lit a candle for a little while. Now, it sails off under new owners to its new future as a Jazz station. THANKS again to everybody who spent time with the station, both listeners and behind the scenes.

One more thing for you radio fans. The song played right before the sign off was Slim Jenkins Place by Booker T & The MGs. It is rumored that this was the last song to be played when the original WZUM on 1590 changed formats from top 40 to whatever came next. Jim Quinn invited WZUM listeners to change to KQV.

I noticed that PPM has changed the calls of 88.1 to WZUM-FM.
I see that Booker T is going to be appearing at Hartwood Acres as part of the
Free Concert Series this summer.
The Pittsburgh Public Media feed is now routed directly to the 1550 transmitter site. Since it no longer passes through the old Heart and Soul of Pittsburgh control room, I fired up the automation system. The music is playing again. The jingles and old 1550 WZUM legal ID are still playing. The new steam URL is: stream.aspstation.net:8000/zoom
