Mike Tirico to leave ESPN for NBC (Report)

“Monday Night Football” lead play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico is reportedly leaving ESPN for NBC Sports.

Tirico, who has been with ESPN since 1991, is expected to be the lead play-by-play voice on NBC’s new “Thursday Night Football” package of five late-season games, according to Sports Business Daily.

SBD sites “several sources” and says Sean McDonough is a leading candidate to replace Tirico on “MNF.” Tirico also calls major championship golf and tennis, the NBA Playoffs, college basketball and football. Tirico has been the voice of “MNF” since 2006.

A couple places are saying that Sean McDonough is the leading candidate to replace Tirico on Monday Night Football. However, I haven't seen any word as far as who would replace him in ESPN/ABC's #2 play-by-play slot on the NBA coverage.

Another story from ESPN also has veteran play-by-play man Brad Nessler leaving Bristol, and heading to CBS, according to Fox Sports' Clay Travis. Nessler would call NFL and college basketball games (and probably college football on CBSSN), and would be the successor to Verne Lundquist on the Eye's SEC football package.

ESPN has found its new play-by-play guy for Monday Night Football: Sean McDonough will join color commentator Jon Gruden in the booth starting in the fall. The company veteran replaces Mike Tirico, who is leaving the Worldwide Leader to join NBC Sports.

McDonough, the son of Will McDonough, has been with ESPN since 2000 after an earlier stint from 1989-95. He has worked the World Series, NCAA Final Four and the Olympic Games along with such major properties including college football, college basketball and Major League Baseball in recent years. He has also called NFL games for ESPN Radio since 2013.

“This is a dream come true,” said McDonough, who will make his MNF debut with Pro Football Hall of Fame game, which kicks of the NFL preseason on August 7. “One of my favorite memories of my childhood was watching Monday Night Football with my dad, who I know is smiling down on me today.”

Sean McDonough would make a great MNF announcer BUT I can't see Brad Nessler calling ANYTHING on CBS Sports Network given that CBS N gets more eyeballs as an ONLINE ONLY network than CBS Sports Network does on CABLE TV nor do I see him calling BOTH NCAA AND NFL action (Unless he does TNF but then WHO would be his partner ??)

I also wouldn't rule out RADIO duties either (Does MNF on Westwood One comes to mind ??)

EDIT As for Mike Tirico on NBC - That's simple. He'll be the successor to Al Michaels & Doc Emerick (Both are getting up there in their years)

Mike Tirico to Replace Bob Costas as NBC’s Primetime Olympics Host in 2018

Mike Tirico is set to replace Bob Costas as NBC’s primetime Olympics host beginning with next year’s Winter Games. Costas made the revelation on Thursday morning’s “Today” show.

“I am going to be like the rest of the country, watching Mike Tirico, who will be an able successor in Korea for the Winter Olympics” a year from now, Costas said.

As for Costas, he said he would remain with NBC Sports and appear when there’s demand — similar to Tom Brokaw’s current role on NBC News. Costas, who turns 65 in March, has hosted 11 Summer and Winter Games.
