Kvgc 96.5 fm

A new translator for this Jackson station has signed on. It is putting a decent signal into Elk Grove that can be picked up on a Walkman and a portable. I can no longer get KUBU here over the air. When KOIT comes in with warmer weather it's sure to be a mess.

Doesn't matter what the signals do in sacto and elk grove though. Those signals are designed to cover small areas, and elk grove isn't anywhere near those areas. I've been working hard to get the KVGC translator going for KVGC. Worked out some audio level and processing issues this past weekend. It's doing pretty well for the intended coverage area, considering it's relatively low power. It's located on MT. Zion in Pine Grove.

Thanks for the info jammer. I did notice the digital hiccups over the weekend. Don't get me wrong I like listening to the oldies on FM ( no static at all ) even if the signal is not intended for my area. I would even tune in to 1340 on occasion. It's a unique blend of local programming.

yeah, we're still sorting the hiccups out... Our IP STL link isn't perfect quite yet. Yes the programming is quite unique. Very old school, and the surrounding communities love them for it.

I built the IP setup for KUBU-LP's studio and transmitter. Unfortunately, the 96.5 signal is a bloody mess in the Sacramento metro.

Sounds like the OP is on the fringe of coverage for KVGC. Once you start driving north you'll lose it and 96.5 KUBU will take over. And then as you keep driving north, KOIT will take over depending on the season as our friend JammerDave mentions.

Yah, I gotta wonder if lower power up on one of the high rises or the Bee tower would,t be a major improvement.

FWIW, I get it full quieting at my home in Grass Valley. Gotta love that line-of-sight thing. But it's pretty obvious that they built the music library for AM fidelity. That's going to be a hard one to fix.

Listening online it sounds mono and a bit flat. When digging in, it looks like they're delivering some kind of HLS/HDS stream in mono.

Not sure of the codec or bitrate. I'm betting JammerDave will know. :)

I don't know the codec, but it's a "streaming appliance" small box from Streamon. Yes, it is all mono right now. I never wired the stereo program outs as we only needed the mono mixdown from the board when we first put the AM station studio together. We'll get to it eventually, but the FM might go mono anyway, as it would help with the fringe areas. We'll see.

Again, What is the Fringe Coverage?

When I go out this week, I want to know where it ends

That will depend on whether or not you are line of sight to Mt. Zion/Pine Grove, and your distance. Also, there will be times you will hear KOIT from Sutro if the signal from the translator is blocked towards your location, or if you are just too far from it. Remember that this is basically the equivalent of an LPFM, it's just on top of a Mountain with the purpose of serving Amador and Calaveras counties as best we can, especially the "upcountry" from Pine Grove eastwards. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks,

df

Let me know if you want or need help. I always enjoy helping out (or being contracted) by community stations. :)

Interesting, I pulled in a very usable signal from KVGC last week while driving in South Sac, near 47th/Stockton Blvd. At first, I thought it was KUBU-LP but quickly realized it wasn't.

Also, it's too bad that KUBU is such a mess in various areas.. I like the station.

You're the ONLY ones trying to listen to these broadcast signals. Most younger people don't even own receivers anymore. If most listeners are going to listen to it, they'll stream it through an app via their trusty mobile provider. This is the digital age. No one wants to sit through static and picket-fencing to hear a NON HD signal. Much fuss about nothing.

Late response here, but what the hell are you talking about?! Most consumers that actually have HD capable radios don't know that they do, as it came in the car and just works, whether or not they realize it.

And no, we aren't the only ones listening. I can't speak for KUBU's audience, but the KVGC translator has been a huge boon not only to the station, but to those very loyal listeners and advertising supporters in amador and calaveras counties. The little AM cannot really be improved upon, and the ground conductivity is very poor, so range is limited. The addition of the FM translator was such a great help. I have never seen such a loyal crowd of listeners, as those that absolutely love and support KVGC. It's community oriented small town radio done right. I should know, I built the AM and the translator for my friends, the Guidi family that owns the stations.
