WBEN using ABC news now

WBEN has been a CBS affiliate and has their news casts at the top of the hour, but now has some stories from ABC news. Seems unusual to me. WHAM uses FOX and CBS. I wonder if they paid them to play their election coverage, and now get to use their stories?

They've been using wraps from both networks for some time now. And there's no TOH cast during the day - all L&L.

Maybe two months at most. But it started with just election coverage, and now they use their stories too.

They always have local news during the week, 24 hours a day. But in addition they have CBS news casts at the top of the hour at night, and at the bottom of the hour in the morning, during Buffalo's Early News.

I'm just not used to hearing CBS news updates following an interview with an ABC reporter.

Here's a new one. First ABC newscast I've heard tonight at 11. And then a CBS newscast at 11:31, following the 11:30 WBEN news.

It's about network compensation.

That's not as big a factor as it once was, due to budget cuts. Less money for compensation. More need from stations for content. A lot of news stations carry at least two networks for access to multiple reports. ABC offers a lot of extras that CBS doesn't, and vice versa. Even CBS-owned stations carry additional networks for the content.

It appears all national newscasts are now ABC News, and the local newscasts now use ABC music instead of the WBEN music.

Noticed that today as well. So who will pick up the CBS affiliation?

No idea. Not sure if it would be picked up by another station. I don't know that any other station locally had ABC. There is a CBS weekend show, Jill on Money, I wonder if that will be replaced as well.

It should be noted, too, that WBNY-FM(Buffalo State's radio station)also uses ABC News; however, A. it's only a 2 minute or so headline cast and B. it only seems to be used for their All Talk Monday lineup.

(For the record, it's my first post here. Be gentle. :) )

Interesting. I'll have to check it out. Can it be heard away from Buff State?

Yes. A few years ago, WBNY boosted its power to 1,000 W which makes it listenable to a decent chunk of metro Buffalo(except, obviously, downtown). (And for the record, I'm a Buff State graduate and did some on-air shifts there.) If you have the TuneIn app, you can stream WBNY's signal(and, of course, it can be streamed on their website).
