Too many translators

It appears that comedy radio is now has a translator at 93.9 in the east valley. When checking out Radio-Locator, there is a CP for them to have a translator at 102.9 off Usery Mountain, not 93.9 as they are broadcasting.
This poses a couple questions. First, what happened to the community station at 102.9 that chased the pirate down to 87.9?
Secondly, if there is going to be an east valley translator at 93.9, shouldn't they be lower power or direct their signal more southerly? They were fighting each other around 202 and Sky Harbor.

KWSS is a LPFM. If I recall correctly, LPFMs don't have much protection from interference.

Translators can't interfere with full power stations, but I don't think that LPFM stations are offered the same protections. The LPFM service is kind of the red-haired stepchild of the FCC, and the rules for LPFMs seem to be written with keeping LPFM stations from interfering with others and not the other way around.

Here's the map for KWSS. An aside: if they're licensed to Scottsdale, this site doesn't put much of anything over Scottsdale... but I am not a communications lawyer and I don't pretend to understand how the FCC thinks.

LPFM's are meant to serve neighborhoods, not cities. If you can get a LPFM more than about 5 miles from the transmitter, you're getting bonus coverage.

I assigned Nurse Jeff to look into this matter as I am either too busy or too damn lazy to do the research. Here's what Los Buckeye Boyz learned:

- KWSS had an application in to move to South Mtn, but it was dismissed due to 3rd channel interference issues with KDKB & KOOL

- KWSS has requested reconsideration, citing further minutia in FCC regulations pertaining to LPFM's.

- The application calls for a downgrade in Pow-Pow-Power from 2 watts to 1 watt. YIKES!

- In their application, KWSS mentions 3 of their 4 board members reside within 10 miles of the proposed So Mtn xmttr site - which satisfies the FCC's requirement for localism. Go figure.

- Only one board member lives in the COL of Scottsdale

- The published addresses of the other 3 board members show residences of west and south Phoenix. They might as well make the COL Laveen.

- KWSS is working with KDKB and KOOL to resolve issues, as we're sure a South Mtn stick at 1 watt is better than a Shaw Mtn stick at 2 watts

Very good information from the Nurse, who will be treated to a large bowl of menudo once he gets over his lower GI problems. Like John Davis said, we don't pretend to understand how the FCC thinks....it's hard enough for us to understand ourselves!
