FTVLive: Sinclair buying WSJV?

Although Sinclair is not saying anything, sources tell FTVLive that a number of people are going to get the blade in South Bend.

Sinclair is buying WSJV in South Bend, from Quincy Media. They already own WSBT in the market, so, there’s some maneuvering that has to be done. The deal will supposedly close by the end of June.

The reason things are being kept so quiet? Many of the folks at WSJV, are not going to be retained and will be losing their jobs. Sinclair wants people to still come to work, so they’re trying to keep it quiet and business as usual.

Maybe Sinclair could move WSJV's programming to a WSBT subchannel (perhaps a merger with SBT2, which would upgrade to HD?). WSJV's license would then be spun off to Howard Stirk Holdings.

FOX 28 shutting down news operation

ABC57 News has confirmed that Fox 28 is shutting down its news operation at the end of this week.

The television station’s programming is being absorbed by Sinclair owned WSBT starting Monday.

The announcement was made to the staffs at both WSJV and WSBT this afternoon.

ABC57 News is working to find out what this means for the staff of FOX 28.

WSJV, meanwhile, will continue to run its Elkhart-based station with two employees. It will only continue to offer Heroes & Icons network, which offers a mix of classic shows.

A major shake-up, meanwhile, is anticipated for WSJV employees. Some are expected to transfer to other television stations owned by the Quincy, Ill.-based parent company, Oakley said, while others will lose their jobs. "We will be talking with many of our employees about opportunities at our other stations throughout our company, and we'll also be talking with them about severance," he said.

Some WSJV employees are expected to be hired by Sinclair, which will operate a second news operation under the Fox affiliate. A call was not returned Monday by John Nizamis, general manger of WSBT.

Quincy's decision to no longer cover local news in the region's 10-county primary market comes as there is "large consolidation going on" in the industry, Oakley said. "We have thoroughly enjoyed our opportunity to be involved in the Michiana region for over 40 years and will continue to operate a station, but in a far different way. It's a unique set of circumstances that brought us to this decision."

WSBT isn't saying anything, but there are several rumors that WSJV will be shut down, its license canceled, and its spectrum turned over for auction. If that happens, could WBND apply to the FCC to take over the Channel 28.x PSIP? I don't know how that works.

I think they could apply to take a new PSIP, but I can't think of any precedent for the FCC granting such a request. Doesn't mean they wouldn't.

per some folks in South Bend FOX is on both 22-2 and 28-1 until September (when it will leave 28-1)

The 60-day transitional period.

Btw... FTVLive is THAT GOOD!
