Forty years ago this afternoon (July 12, 1976), ABC debuted a new game show partly based off of another one of Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions' creations, "Match Game", and was originally hosted by a MG panelist, Richard Dawson. Of course, the show is "Family Feud".

We TV enthusiasts here have probably discussed "Feud" in some form or another since these boards here been around. For me, it was one of my favorite shows growing up...I guess since I'm 36, I would attached myself more to the Ray Combs versions, and but growing up with my grandma during my formative years, the Dawson version was always on the TV. I've never been all that enamored with the current version for a lot of reasons, most importantly of which (at least during with Steve Harvey), the contestants and studio audience are just too damn obnoxious to bear. I can tolerate Harvey, and certainly don't mind the risque questions (even with Dawson and Combs, there were questions asked where they were considered risque, for the time, as well), but I can't stand to watch more than five minutes of any episode. Plus, the current version is just overexposed--not just on GSN, but pretty much every Viacom channel without a "MTV" or "Nickelodeon" branding to their name airs "Feud" constantly.

Anywho...here's to a happy 40th anniversary to one of television's most enduring game show franchises!

There is no question that Steve Harvey is a popular host on this show. However, his exposure with this show on GSN is over the top. Way too much. Perhaps they have ratings data to support the number of hours on GSN, but the number of hours per day that one can watch both the current and older syndicated product tends to dilute the brand, IMO. To the credit of the show and host, it is just as funny today, if not more, than the Dawson episodes.
