Winchester, Virginia Star "TV Showtime" January 1980 cable line-up.

My cousin is in the process of moving from Northern Virginia to Texas so he sent me this in the mail thinking that I would be interested. "TV Showtime" was a weekly TV insert that was published by the Winchester, VA Star newspaper. On the cover was a photo of the Winchester area's top radio people including Joe Pasquali ( WINC ), Jim Lawrence ( WFTR ), John Luce ( WZFM ) and Pam Bell ( WHPL ).

Winchester TV Cable line-up for the week beginning Saturday January 12, 1980 ending Friday January 18, 1980 ( The Winchester Star did not and still doesn't publish a Sunday edition ).

channel 2....WMAR ( CBS ) Baltimore
channel 3....WHSV ( ABC & NBC ) Harrisonburg, VA
channel 4....WRC ( NBC ) Washington( during NBC's primetime this would switch to WHAG )
channel 5....WTTG ( Ind. ) Washington
channel 6....WINC ( cable 6 ) Winchester
channel 7....WJLA ( ABC ) Washington
channel 8....WBFF ( Ind. ) Baltimore
channel 9....WDVM ( CBS ) Washington
channel 10...WDCA ( Ind. ) Washington
channel 11...WHAG ( NBC) Hagerstown, MD
channel 12...WVPT ( PBS ) Harrisonburg, VA (..probably WVPY Front Royal, VA )
channel 13...WJZ ( ABC ) Baltimore

..with the HBO converter box...
channel 3....HBO
channel 4....WBAL ( NBC ) Baltimore
channel 5....WXEX ( ABC ) Richmond ( I don't remember ever seeing WXEX on cable there )
channel 6....WTVR ( CBS ) Richmond
channel 7....WETA ( PBS ) Washington
channel 8....CBN ( Christian Broadcasting Network )
channel 9...nothing yet but about 2 years later this would be the home of Baltimore's WJZ with ESPN popping up on channel 13 without the HBO box.

Winchester, VA might be one of the largest cities in the country to not have a Sunday paper based there. The city is certainly large enough for one (unless a special license is needed for Sunday papers and the owner is too cheap)

Harrisonburg, Virginia which is bigger than Winchester doesn't have it's own Sunday paper either however both papers were/are owned by the Byrd Family and they apparently still believe in Sunday being a day of rest. A very conservative family.
