The Beat SA & KONO

Why hasn't anyone gone after KONO? KONO's playlist sounds nothing what SA sounded like back in 80's.

Don't know why nobody has gone after KONO, though it seems like classic hits battles are pretty rare. I suspect some of it may have to do with a relatively small number of stations per capita and the fact that there are more Spanish-language stations sharing the real estate. Demographically, you have more segments of the market, which means less battles within formats.

There was a discussion here a few months back about how today's KONO is definitely not the KONO of Jack Roth. Truth is, San Antonio isn't the San Antonio of the 80's either. Both the Hispanic listener and the English-dominant listener are a lot different from what they were in the 80's. KONO was going to have to appeal to a broader segment of the population than it did decades ago, and, when it comes to what this 40 something listened to in the 80's versus what tests well today, the music is a little different. A lot of the dance and R&B tunes from that era burned out quickly, and there's not much desire from most of us to hear those songs again. About the only rap songs from that era that test well today are the two Tone Loc hits Wild Thang and Funky Cold Medina, and even both of those have me reaching for the button despite them being popular in '89.

The beat hasn't been good for years, it's the same old songs repeated every two or three hours. I remember a co-worker of mine used to blast the beat all day, and I would here the same 20 songs at least five times a day, it figures there morning show isn't any good either. Isn't their show syndicated from Albuquerque, N.M.? I've never listened to it but if it's anything like Yo 95.1's morning segments where they talk about the Kardashians and the latest tweets, I'll pass.

As for KONO there's really no need for them to play all of those burned out rhythmic pop and R&B hits, just because they were popular in the 80's, doesn't mean they'll be hits now or that people want to hear them again. R&B and dance music of the 80's/90's, was nothing more than a fad just like disco was in the 70's, it's cool to hear some of those songs every once in a while, but I'd rather hear something else. Though you'll hear some of them on there from time to time like Cameo's Word Up or Oh Shiela. All of those radio stations with dance rhythmic formats burned out quickly years ago, the closest station to what your suggesting is probably Yo 95.1 and even they don't touch anything that sounds to much like R&B/pop or rarely play any 80's music. I don't think anyone's gone after KONO because there's really no need for San Antonio to have another station that plays the same 80's hits as five other stations, and if they went after KONO with a rhythmic old school format like what your suggesting I don't think it would even put a dent in KONO's ratings. I have noticed that I've added much more 80's in the past week, some which weren't even on the billboard hot 100 interesting.

Aquarius, that's the problem. Today's radio cares more about what's on Billboard 100 than what's popular locally. I am not a fan of Energy 94.1 for several reasons, but I do like the Latin SA flare it has.

Does anybody know what demos KONO is pulling? 6 or 12+ does not really tell the story. Advertisers do not want a listening audience over 55. As with all stations the billing is what is important. If KONO can rate high with 24-54 then the billing should be good. If the majority of their listeners are 55+ then it does not matter if they pull a 30 rating. Their billing will be way down...

KONO is #1 in 25-54, about a point and a half above the #2 station. They are even tied for the top rank in 18-49. They are in a very close 5-way battle for top billings, too.

I don't think any San Antonio station pays any attention to the Billboard charts. Stations will use, first, their in-house research, then look at M-Scores, and then consider BDS or MediaBase stations "like their own". They will also look at streaming and download stats, which can be stratified to the local level.

KTFM is now down to 13th in 18-49, matching the low level they were at around December of last year.

The latest PPM's show The Beat is out of the Top 10 Mornings and Middays. Time for a new morning show?

In the target 18-34 in mornings, the only stations at the same level or above are rock, Regional Mexican and Country. No CHR / Contemporary station "Beats" them. In 18-49, the classic hits, adult hits and the Christian Contemporary stations are the contenders.

The 12+ does not show the story in a very tightly compacted market; in 18-49 in the whole market on a three book average, one station has a rating of 0.7, five have a 0.6, and one has a 0.5 and four have a 0.4 rating. That is the top 11 stations, all very close to each other.

Here's what KONO's added to their station in the past week, definitely not the oldies station that played 50's, 60's, and 70's anymore. Some songs were on the station a few years ago and then dropped and now their back again, mostly the 70's stuff lol. Sorry if I got some of the years wrong :p

The only oldies left on the station are brown eyed girl, sugar sugar, respect, and the chi-lites and Frankie Valli. I really wish they'd stop playing American pie, having to listen to 8 minutes of that song followed by Dead or Alive is awkward. As for local flavor? Well they do play Christopher Cross who is from here, and they also play La Bamba the 1987 version and War, for those who like their lowrider oldies.

I do not know how this playlist is so popular. KONO as you stated is not a true "Classic Hit" or "Oldies" station; but it is winning in the demos and in billing. So I guess they will not be calling me for a consult...
