New diginet: Antenna TV Classics

Encouraged by the success of its first multicast network, Antenna TV, Tribune Broadcasting is cooking up another, Antenna TV Classics.

It would specialize in “the older-skewing shows,” says Sean Compton, president of strategic programming and acquisition for the station group. The original Antenna TV would then be free to recalibrate its lineup with shows to attract younger viewers, he says.

If Tribune goes ahead with the new channel, it will reaffirm the fundamentals of the multicasting business, which converts low-cost, but well-known movies and TV shows, into modest, but steady, revenue streams and profits for the diginets and their affiliates.

Dumb move. Antenna TV is successful because they have the truly classic shows. If they want to start a new one, use that to broadcast the newer shows, don't mess with the original.

Agreed with the dumb move. There are companies that are hesitant to add subchannels and now they want one more added to the bunch? SO what happens in areas where AntennaTV is carried but not AntennaTV2...folks be mad

ATSC 3.0 isn't going to happen anytime soon. No way does Congress allow another format transition which requires new equipment so quickly. How do you conclude that the spectrum auction increases the opportunities for diginets? There will be fewer broadcasters to partner with.

I'm thinking such a sub channel would probably go older than Antenna TV does or at least cover a longer period of TV history. Antenna-TV had a large movie library (is it still there). This new sub could feature more movies and maybe some NEWSY type shows like "Believe It Or Not" or "That's Incredible" maybe even get their hands on some game shows.

If they go that route and develop the NEW channel with different content, that would be great. I interpreted the announcement that they were going to change the existing Antenna TV and move the current lineup to the new diginet.

I agree BUT avoid the FAKE Reality TV junk(The ones that used to air on TruTV & A&E are OK as Justice Network has demonstrated with Bait Car ) as well as the Law & Order & CSI trilogies (Too many cable channels PLUS ION carry them)

JMO.....

Cheers & 73 :)
