The Answer: This Gulf coast town in southeast Texas may very well "need to learn Spanish if they want to keep listening".

Purple?

"Where is Winnie?"

Good.

"Let's go with reoccurring events for a thousand."

You remember November 12, 2004. Don't you, John? I bet Mr. O does.

When did KLOL leave the rock format, Purple.

(Wikipedia says: "On November 12, 2004, after a rerun of the Walton & Johnson Show, KLOL changed its format to Hurban (Spanish-language hip hop).")

Like a broken clock, Wikipedia is right twice a day. This would be one of those instances.

Dropped album rock at 10:35am, Friday, November 12, 2004. Last song played, "I'm Free" by The Who. The 10,101 songs in a row started after a short montage introducing Reggaeton/Hurban "la nueva Mega 101, Latino and proud".

What a day. Every news station covered it. Most radio stations mentioned it. After 12 years of nonexistence, the KLOL call letters are still recognized for what it once was by most Houstonians, not for what it has become. No slight intended toward Mega, but no matter how long it remains in its current incarnation, nor any future formats that may come to 101-1 FM, it will never be remembered, nor continue to resonate in the minds of Houstonians as long as its predecessor which birthed those famous calls has.

Are you saying Free FM is going away?

In a return of respect for those that have respectfullly requested my silence on the subject, I'll say nothing further until there is a deal in place AND a license transfer has been accepted for filing.

I fixed it, thats supposed to read 10:10AM

What, the time of the flip? If you logged 10:10, you're clock needed a battery 12 years ago, John. KLOL didn't switch directly after the W&J rerun. 5 or 6 songs played afterward, including Metallica's "Sad But True" and Jethro Tull's "Aqualung". "I'm Free" is in the history books as the first and last song played on KLOL, but it wasn't played directly after W&J.

It's one of those things that are emblazoned into my mind, much like knowing exactly where I was on September 11 @ 8:15 CDT.

Haha! No Purple. I was listening that day and recording it. Those songs before Metallica & The Who, were played during Walton & Johnson. I added a link on Wikipedia to the audio on formatchange.com. The recording is mine and edited/scoped myself for posting. I know whats on that recording. The audio on FC only has the tail end of W&J, into the 10'Oclock Rock Block starting with Metallica then The Who. "I'm Free" ended at (correction) 10:11AM and thats when the flip happened.

Here's a link: http://formatchange.com/klol-becomes-mega-101/

the post says 10:11AM, that seems to make more sense. (101.1)

I stand corrected then, rage, and I admit my memory is not as sharp as I had thought. I swore it was just after 10:30 when it took the dive.

Yeah it's one of those things that I remember where I was when it happened, (on the Pierce Elevated getting ready to head south on 288, I had left my VCR recording the audio before I left for work earlier that morning). I'll never forget the shock while hearing the flip. I knew it was going to happen but it was still hard to believe. I had gotten word the day before from a friend of my (then)girlfriend, who worked at Clear Channel. That's how I knew to record it.
