MTV Hits to be rebranded as NickMusic

Vh1 Classic becomes MTV Classic August 1

35 years ago on August 1 was the beginning of a new era for cable television and for music. It was the debut of MTV. The channel that changed TV forever. This August 1 it's going to start all over again. The channel known as Vh1 Classic is changing its name to MTV Classic. Hopefully it has a lot of music programming. It may be little more than a name change, but we will soon find out.

I wonder how MTV will define "classic" for this new channel. Any chance that it will be 80s/90s? I have a hunch that their definition of "classic" will be a lot sooner than some of us wish. (It wouldn't surprise me if they define "classic" as anything over a year old).

I would expect '80s/'90s, with a harder edge than the previous VH1 branding allowed.

I'm glad to see MTV doing more to acknowledge its musical heritage. Its MTV Live channel (can't remember what it used to be called) has some really good concert footage of classic and new acts from all over the musical map.

Vh1 Classic always seemed like MTV Classic to me already anyway because of the classic heavy metal and hard rock. When that stuff was new it was on MTV not VH1 of course. I don't see the point of playing all videos anyway since I think younger folks (and older like myself) have gotten used to youtube, Vevo etc. The only thing Vh1 Classic had that was interesting was artist bios and That Metal Show.

MTV Live was Palladia

VH1 Classic

Will VH1Classic changes to MTV Classic on Aug 1st, no more metal mania, right. More pop, rap & reality shows, right?

will they air any classic shows from when MTV first stopped playing music videos?

This is simply a demographic move. MTV classic will appeal to the 35-54 audience, who were 12-34 in the 80's and early 90's. VH1 does not have the same brand appeal to this demo. I would hope they don't dumb it down, however. Perhaps offer some quality MTV programming and not make it "Real World Seattle, NY, or LA", or even "Jersey Shore". But who knows. MTV can continue to run the teen pregnant shows and rerun the Catfish series for the 100th time, but this new channel needs something that has not been seen for awhile.

The line-up includes reality shows like "Pimp My Ride". The appeal is going to be to the audience that grew up on the 90s/2000s version of MTV (same audience tat will watch 90s Nickelodion cartoons. It won't be for the original MTV generation, but for their now 30-something children

Yeah, I don't we are too far apart on this. Perhaps just parsing the demos. The idea is generally to bring back MTV viewers from the 80's, 90's, and even the early 2000's. I don't think they will ignore the original MTV generation, however. Afterall, a Go-Go's video never seems to go out of style.

In addition Viacom owns the rights to these shows. They've been off the air for a long time. It's TV Land for Gen X.

Bring back TRL and some of those game shows they did in the 90s. Plus the Spring Break specials were spectacular.

And bring back "Throwback Hours", where they highlight 80's videos. This is indeed classic MTV. If they are few and far between they really can't hurt the channel, right?

For the 90's/2000 generation the Go-Go's are out of style or non existent. We are talking about catering to a generation that was the MTV demo 20 years ago. The oldest thing I can see is Club MTV and some 80's blocks out of peak viewing times. With youtube, you can access a 80's video at any time. The only enhancement is is they have the original VJ's interviewing some of the 80's artists or do s flashback concert series, or where are they now?

Mtv

Fox 26 here in Houston announced that MTV will bring back many classic shows. It will rename VH1 classics and will name the channel MTV CLASSICS

It's true...they've been showing promos for it on the Palladia channel, which they renamed MTV Live. Looks like they're bringing back Beavis & Butthead, among the shows.

For the most part they are bringing back mid 90's MTV.

and some 2000s MTV. People on the MTV Classic facebook page seem to be confused by this  people are complaining the channel is playing Nsync and Nickelback. I can't see it so I have no idea, but I would'nt be surprised. It would be nice if rock fans actually cared more about the bands that make new music , especially their beloved ones from the 80s instead of whining about MTV not playing old stuff they can watch online or on a dvd.

This is exactly the issue that pushed MTV away from playing music in the 90s. They'd try to play a wide range of music, from boy bands to rappers and heavy metal, and people complained. This was the start of the splintering of music. So it's appropriate that people now are complaining, because they complained then too.

The blocks on MTV Classic I Want My 80's, 90's Nation, Headbangers for heavy medal & rock, Hip-Hop Mix, Pop Nation, TRL Playlist, MTV Classic Videos etc.

Viacom to rebrand MTV Hits as NickMusic

Viacom is changing its tune slightly to prepare for pay TV’s game of musical chairs. Facing the possibility that its low-rated channels will be left out of distributors’ new skinny bundles, the company today says it will rebrand MTV Hits into NickMusic, described as “a 24-hour music video destination for kids.”

After the change takes place on September 9, NickMusic will offer videos from different musical genres. It also will run artist-hosted blocks, branded segments, and long-form specials and series including concerts.

Nickelodeon has longstanding connections to the pop music scene. Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio digital platform features Nick-related celebrities on NickRadio (which promotes itself as offering “All the Hits, All the Slime”). It also features pop stars in its annual Kids Choice Awards.
