K-EARTH 101 has entered the 90's!

Last night they played
Hey ya by outkast.

They also play it on KTWV.
The problem there is its a really upbeat song, so it doesn't fit real well with a station that plays more of an adult contemporary type format. And its way to early to play it on Kearth.

6:38 this morning, they played "Unbelievable" by EMF
4:56 8/1, "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls
1:24 8/1. "Come Undone" by Duran Duran
10:52 8/1, "No Rain" by Blind Melon

Their 90's music is no longer set to just their 90's at 9 segment, it's spreading to all dayparts.

Some 00's played this week:

Drift Away - Uncle Kracker
Hey Ya - OutKast
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

And 2010's "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green 5:31am, 7/29 ??? WOW!

It appears that any 60's and pre-1975 music leftovers have been eliminated, including "Brown Eyed Girl"

well in 2020 music from the 2000's will be oldies. Remember KRTH did play No Doubt-its my life a 2003 song. KRTH needs the current demos one way or another. As in people born in the 1980's and 1990's at this point.

It seems like they are all over the place now.
Probably time to drop 70's now too, if they are going into 2000's now :/

I used to say it's not about chart position. Now it's also not about the decade. They're creating a curated playlist that's aimed at a targeted audience. That's not always something you can define by a release date.

Yes radio programming used to be easier. Anyone could do it. Just play a handful of hits that fit your genre. It's not that simple anymore. And the stakes are a lot higher.

But.....are Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Outkast, Uncle Kracker (despite being a remake) and Cee Lo Green, classic hits?? I believe they are border lining recent top 40 radio hits. I remember when KRTH played currents in the early 80's.....this could be along those lines in 2016. Just sounds like KRTH has gone through a total makeover these last couple years.

On the other hand, you have the upper range of your demos (48-54) wondering what the heck is going on here. And as for the 55+, they might have all but tuned out by now.

Eliminating the Johnny Mann jingles has made the station sound flat, in my opinion.

I believe the 70's will be history on this station really soon, sad to say.

It seems most of the 90's during the day are lite alternative songs, not to heavy except alanis morrisette.
No pop songs yet, the only exception is the 90's at nine. They play all kinds of 90's. Last night it was Color me badd.
I think they already played informer by snow. Hes not on dayparts or humpy dance that got played last week. As well as ice ice baby. Would be funny if they got played regulary as they are now novelty songs.

Sounds like it is becoming more of an Adult Hits station like a Jack FM rather than classic hits like its sister stations KLUV in Dallas or WCBS in New York, Adult Hits stations tend to play music from 1970 to the present, depending on what city your in.

I thought KRTH could maybe pull a classic hits format that plays 70's, 80's, and 90's like KOLA 99.9, wasn't expecting them to add Outkast or even **** You by Charles Barkley. I've hear those songs on Jack FM and on Hot AC stations regularly.

I agree at some point more 90's songs will have to be a part of K-Earth 101. They would have to base their playlists on what KIIS-fm played back then. 90's songs at this point could fit in to the oldies format. I knew that KISQ was playing some 90's songs on their playlists before they became the Breeze. Some oldies stations around the country have included 90's songs in the Oldies format such as Q102 San Francisco was one of them but q102 was more focused on what KMEL played in the 90's.

Wrong! It will be based off what song test well,
Not what KIIS FM played back in the 90's,
Hopefully this will be the last discussion on this.
Im sure Frank will agree.

Didn't Cee-Lo Green do that one? And isn't Charles Barkley a former NBA player, not a singer?

Yes yes he did with his band Gnarls Barkley, and yes yes he was, he's also an NBA sports commentator now.

FWIW, 6+ ratings for KOSF 103.7 have been inching upward since the iHeart 80s flip. Same 6+ figures show KISQ (The Breeze) now ahead of KOIT. To be fair, there's a real logjam with KISQ, KIOI, KOIT, KMVQ, KLLC sometimes tenths of a point apart. I'm sure demos tell a story in which each of those stations is dealt daypart wins and losses. But overall the AC/HotAC/CHR field is a lot more competitive in the Bay Area than it has been in recent years. As I understand it, KOIT's cume is still enviable, but they're not converting like they once did.

Stations that have made obvious attempts to appeal to younger demos are biting it. See KGO and KFOG, among others. Listening to FogHead Pinfield interview ___(name of who-cares artist)____on KFOG is like trying to comprehend an esoteric Rolling Stone interview late at night when your eyelids are already heavy.

KGMZ lost audience bigtime in this survey, but getting the Warriors PBP is major. Can KNBR maintain #1 6+ while the Giants continue in free fall since the All Star Break? We'll soon find out.

But the real story: Watch out for a sneak attack by the dark horse - Salem's AM 860 The Answer K-TRumP .... and yes I'm kidding.

But in 25-54, KOIT is 6th while KISQ is 15th. Still, it is a fall from first in the market from January to March for KOIT, with a gradual fall in rank over the last 5 months.

KOSF has moved to 14th from 19th in January, with a steady if somewhat wobbly upward trending all year.
