Radio 1992

Classic American Top 40 with Casey Kasem has a new home. It will be broadcast on Sunday mornings from 8am-11am on WPLM-FM, Today's Easy 99.1

The station will run 70s and 80s versions alternate weeks.
 
The last time I heard it here in the Worcester area was late last year on 96.1 WSRS before the annual Christmas flip and then it never returned afterwards.

Sirius XM has run it for a while, and here is my take on it

there are a lot of lousy songs on those countdowns, not the one hit wonders or "lost" songs, I'm talking real honest to goodness grade A fecal matter that should have been buried in a landfill. Half the songs, if not more have not had airplay in 20 years, and a bunch of them are going to be out of the format.

I listened for a bit this AM.

Boney M charted with a non Christmas song.

I enjoy hearing songs I have not heard in a long time.

PS; It would be my contention that early and mid 70s music on the whole blew big chunks.

Song 40-30 can get a little iffy, but after that it fine. People like the nostalgic feel to it, and when you take the three hour show, the lesser known titles are edited way down

Must be a matter of "taste", I personally remember working on air at this time, and love all these songs. great tunes, and would rather hear these than a lot of burned out "tested" songs of today.
 
Agreed, good stuff.Saw John Sebastian a few wks back at Cabot in Beverly.Sometimes fun to do an oh-wow or that's interesting type of tune,as I do occasionally on WMWM

. had completely forgot about Think, D.O.A. and love the Diesel track.
 
When 93.7 was Mike "we play anything", they used to play it.Their playlist later narrowed to the overplayed--and they did well with it,but Ent. needed an FM home for EEI so they ditched Mike.Last song played was the familiar Free Bird.

Some stations aired the "top Christmas songs" countdown during the holidays, but there were only two of those produced, that I was ever aware of (1971 and 1973) so repeated airings of those might become monotonous after a while.

If any of those were just randomly aired, I might agree with you. However, with the countdowns, we are hearing them in context with other songs that were popular at the time. You can pick any random chart date, and probably half of them would not have stood the test of time.

And with the countdowns, we are hearing them at low-priority listening times over the weekend. (Usually)

Those songs were edited by the network (ABC/Watermark) at the time the countdown was produced. As I understand it, the countdowns are being aired now exactly as they were then. The songs were often cut down due to time constraints. Tough to fit in all those songs in just three hours, and with the commercials, too. This is why they expanded to four hours in 1978.

The songs that were most likely to be severely edited were the ones that were on their way down on the countdowns. They were not edited for the benefit of us in 2016 because they could not have envisioned that anyone in 2016 would ever want to hear these countdowns again.
 
This is a great addition to WPLM. I always loved that program and this has always been a good station for it. I know PLM has often tried to avoid syndicated programming (except Delilah) but I think this is an exception. AT40 was always one of the few syndicated shows that I actually enjoyed. And I saw someone's comment about songs 40-30, and I think it's good that they haven't had AirPlay in a really long time. Because then it'll make you go "Oh my GOD!! I don't even remember the last time I heard this." And the station has other programming devoted to just that, such as the Back in the Day easy cafe every day with Scott Reiniche, who is one of the nicest and best DJs I've ever heard. It's very rare for him to turn down a request. And also Found Cuts On Demand with Dave Newfeld. It's what makes WPLM so unique.

However, I do have a few suggestions. Why exactly are Strictly Sinatra and the Great American Songbook still on there? They were appropriate when Easy 99.1 first started out as a standards station, but it seems like they have moved further and further away from that format as time has gone on. And what's gonna happen when Ron Della Chiesa retires?

Anyway, my suggestion is to drop the programming that airs on Sunday night, and then instead of alternating between 70s and 80s from week to week (this may actually be a problem in some cases, such as the year-end countdown shows that are often in 2 parts), air the 70s shows in the morning and air the 80s shows (all 4 hours) at night.

Just found out that Easy 99.1 will be airing a marathon this weekend. They'll be airing it on Sunday morning like normal, but also airing it on Saturday morning, Sunday night, and Monday morning. They'll be airing the top 50 songs of the 70s and the top 50 songs of the 80s. But I don't know which shows will be airing at what time.
