NBC affiliate coming to St Joseph

A new NBC broadcast station is coming to the St. Joseph market, News-Press & Gazette Co. said Wednesday.

Officials with the media company told a gathering of employees of a major new investment planned. NPG, through its subsidiary News-Press TV LLC, has reached an affiliation agreement with Comcast / NBCUniversal, the parent organization for the NBC network.

The new station serving St. Joseph and the nearby region will be known as NBC 21 KNPG and is expected to go on the air this fall.

The NBC affiliate will be operated jointly with four other local broadcast properties owned by News-Press TV. These include a FOX affiliate, FOX 26 KNPN, launched in 2012 along with entertainment network The CW, Spanish-language Telemundo and the 24/7 news and weather channel News-Press NOW.

The broadcast stations share a newsroom with the St. Joseph News-Press and newspressnow.com.

Look for KNPG to take KSHB's place on cable and satellite in St Joseph. The market still lacks a CBS affiliate though.

Wait a second, Channel 21 is already CW, and the KNPG call letters already belong to the Telemundo affiliate, so there will have to be adjustments, like CW moving to 21.2 with NBC moving to the main signal.

Yes, NBC will be 21.1 and CW will be 21.2. Not sure what Telemundo affiliate's call letters will change to.

It could be the KBJO-LD call letters that The CW currently has on.

Basically... KBJO-LD goes to Telemundo and KNPG-LD goes to NBC/CW.

They would be smart not to put it on KNPG 30....it broadcasts a paltry 750 watts due to being short spaced by the Ion affiliate in KC also on RF30 (which almost covers St Joe)

KBJO broadcasts at the maximum 15kwon RF16

It will be on 21 (which uses digital channel 16).

One error in the article

NPG has no influence on whether the Kansas City NBC station, KSHB-TV, will be available on cable and satellite systems in St. Joseph after NBC 21 KNPG is launched later this year. That determination will be made by the cable and satellite distributors.

Dish cannot carry any out of market station once this station launches. That's the rule they agreed to with the FCC a few years ago to get the ability to import stations again. If there is a affiliate in the market...even if it is not carried on Dish..they CAN NOT import a different station.
Directv could through their Sig Viewed channels option...but rarely do

launched today

A new era in St. Joseph broadcast television history arrives Tuesday with the introduction of NBC 21 KNPG.

KNPG will be available over-the-air on Channel 21.1 to area viewers with a digital antenna to about a 30-mile radius.

KSHB 41, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, still will be available over-the-air. For the time being, the station will remain on the Suddenlink, Rainbow and United systems. However, KNPG will replace KSHB for subscribers of both DISH and DirecTV. The decision on which station airs is up to the provider.

KNPG’s other channel designations will be as follows: Suddenlink 2 and HD 102; DirecTV 21; DISH 41; Rainbow 11; and United 16 and HD 1016.

Eric Bradley, general manager of News-Press TV, said many reasons went into the decision to bring KNPG to the region. The move comes 4½ years after the company’s successful launch of FOX 26 KNPN — which represented its initial broadcast investment in the community.

“NBC is the strongest network in the country,” Bradley said. “We saw an opportunity for the most-watched network in America to provide large audiences into our local news.”

He added the channel and NBC affiliation represent a major investment in the community, with a stated goal of becoming the most-viewed station in the area.

“News-Press NOW provides the community with in-depth, enterprising stories from the largest newsroom in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas,” he said. The channel will enable those resources to reach new audiences for newscasts at both 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. weekdays.

“The local viewership has shown they are looking for an alternative in local news on television,” said Bradley. Research conducted by the company revealed an appreciation of the shared resources with the St. Joseph News-Press.

Bradley said KNPG provides the opportunity to tell new and more relevant stories with the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. time slots for the newscasts. The station’s weekend newscasts will air at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The lineup of local, syndicated and NBC programming officially starts at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
