CNN to have a Drone unit

I'm kinda surprised local stations haven't made use of drone technology yet (A drone can get down in areas where their chopper simply can't)

Cheers & 73 :)

Some stations were in debates to have a drone unit at one point. Most notably TV stations in San Francisco and Sacramento right after the 2014 American Canyon quake the stations here did use Drone footage of Downtown Napa.

Update now we have Italian News outlets send out their Drone units to the epicenter to cover the 2016 Italy Quake.

Also Burma News outlets also release their drone unit to cover their quakes too.

WABC-7 in NYC debuted a drone on the local news a few months ago. I have not seen it since, so I wonder if they ran into troubles using it.

Well as far as I know some states have been debating over drones too such as how will it avoid hitting rescue helicopters and airplanes. I knew that Calfire and the California Highway Patrol ordered drones off the airspace for now because it was interfering with their air tankers and helicopters. This is why you don't see drone units covering wildfires in California for now. Didn't some stations in some parts of the country send their drone units to cover floods live and tornado damage recently and what was that state's drone policy look like when stations went to that area. Usually FAA covers fines, registration and other issues regarding drones nationwide though.

I think they used when those two buses collided in Newark last week but that's probably about it.....

Here's one reason why some stations stopped using their drones for now. It's because of state laws regarding drones running into a rescue operation. The regulations for safe airspace has not been established so far.
First off, there's a HUGE difference between the tall building of NYC & the tall trees in a California forest

Secondly, a news chopper is better suited to cover a wildfire than ohh sa.....A collision between two buses in the heart of Downtown

As much we like to sometimes affectionately & sarcastically refer to NYC as a "Forest", in reality it isn't :D

;D Wow and yes also some areas of New York have been counted as restricted airspace since 9/11 this is one factor why we don't have many drones being used for news.
