Interesting how several of those carried no FOX affiliate. By 1989 they were a fairly big deal.

I believe my cable system in Michigan at that time carried three FOX stations.

Where in MI were you? I'm guessing WKBD was one of the three as that was carried pretty much statewide and into parts of Ohio and Wisconsin at the time. It was carried in Grand Rapids as late as 1999 after KBD had gone to UPN and was only dropped after Grand Rapids got their own UPN affiliate.

It was Hillsdale. WKBD was one of them. WXMI from Grand Rapids was another.
The third was either WSYM in Lansing or WUPW in Toledo....I don't recall precisely.

This was pre-SYNDEX and I had multiple affiliates for all networks on that system.

Also when there were few cable networks. Even without syndex, distant stations would have dropped off (maybe not as quickly) due to more cable networks and limited channel capacity at the time.

On a side note, it appears that Manistee and Ludington didn't have a FOX affiliate on cable until WGKI came on (the Ludington Daily News included grids for both Ludington and Manistee in their TV listings and WKBD never showed up in the grid, while multiple Green Bay and Milwaukee stations did show up [but not their FOX affiliates at the time]),

I think the local cable system was picking-up a lot of those stations over the air.
WTVG in Toledo was on my system. There were certain days where WZZM in Grand Rapids
would start to overpower it, and that would go out over the cable.

One of the Fox shows I liked to watch at the time was America's Most Wanted.
I remember one particular guy they picked up in North Carolina told the cops that he
had gone there specifically because there was no Fox affiliate in the area. Guess he
figured he'd be safe!

Yes by 1989/1990 FOX was a fairly big deal in most places especially in the larger markets. In the smaller markets not as much though. Actually as late as 1991 I can remember driving in both Colorado Springs and Roanoke, Virginia and their local FOX affiliates actually had to resort to using billboards just to tell people that FOX really does exist in their areas such as the billboard I saw for FOX 21 on Academy Blvd. in Colorado Springs with a big photo of the cast of Married..With Children saying "FOX IS NOW ON THE AIR IN COLORADO SPRINGS ON CHANNEL 21 !!"..never mind the fact that FOX 21 had already been around since day one of well..FOX ( 1986 ).

The Duluth market was quite interesting when it came to FOX affiliates pre-KQDS. Ironwood (the eastern end of the Duluth market) had WGKI (!) and WLUK for FOX (and still has two FOX affiliates on cable to this day with WLUC-DT2 being seen there in addition to KQDS; Ironwood had three at one point with WGKI/WFQX -> WMQF, WLUK, and KQDS). I think KVRR (KQDS's sister station) had some translators in western portions of the market. WKBD may have been on cable in eastern portions of the market before it dropped FOX.

Glendive, MT had Foxnet until the very end, then KDVR replaced it. Now KHMT is seen on cable.

Portland, Maine had Foxnet in the early 2000s after their FOX affiliate dropped it for The WB. A local FOX station returned a couple of years later via the former PAX affiliate.

They did have translators in the Minneapolis market though too
Donnelly (system is gone now...was a privately owned system)
Brainerd (dropped in 08 because Brainerd is Mpls market and has KMSP)
Park Rapids, MN (transmitter went kaput.....FCC has the license now)
Alexandria (part of the Selective TV setup...dropped years ago...want to say maybe 08)
Bemidji (taken off the air when then FOX KFTC signed on in 1999)
Walker (long gone too...now a KMSP translator privately owned)
