FTVLive: Will KRON be sold in the spectrum auction?

It's the elephant in the room that neither Media General, nor Nexstar want to talk about.

Sources have been telling FTVLive for months that KRON in San Francisco is more than likely to be sold in the spectrum auction and the station could just end up going dark.

No one at Media General or Nextsar which is buying Media General will confirm that, but in recent presentations to investors, it seemed very clear.

I will point out that Albuquerque is a "not needed" market by the FCC, so no stations were even able to submit bids to participate in the auction there. So that omission is an error. Wouldn't be surprising if all five omissions were errors.

Huh? Just because the VHF channel gets sold doesn't mean the station goes dark. That was not the purpose of the FCC auction. KRON currently operates on digital channel 38 (UHF) and virtual channel 4 (PSIP). Most TV companies have been holding on to the VHF space for various reasons. But selling the VHF space doesn't mean employees are out of a job.

Will NBC go after this? Maybe get a better price if KRON does indeed go dark.

What would the upside for NBC be? They left KRON....it'll be 15 years ago on New Year's Eve. During that time, NBC has poured millions into NBC Bay Area on Channel 11 and KRON has fallen in ratings, revenue and public consciousness.

It should go. KRON has been a shell of its own self since KNTV took NBC. On the other hand, My Network TV could move to KICU or KOFY without problem.
