WAIZ (Big ''WAYS'' 63) Now Broadcasting OLDIES on 105.9 MHz FM

Found this on Thursday Morning. Ironically, way out on the EAST Side of Charlotte. Traced the Signal back to the NW once my Business was done in Metro Charlotte. Went and got in contact with WAIZ. They started Xmitting on 105.9 MHz about "two to four weeks ago" (depending on who you talk to).

They are Licensed with 250 Watts, as a LPFM Signal. The FCC won't let them increase their Transmission Power because it could "wreak havoc" on 105.7 FM (Religious Bible-Thumper in Pineville/Rock Hill) -or- on 106.1 FM ''Mexican Radio'' from Waxhaw, N.C. (*Heaven Forbid* either of these might actually happen! <cough>).

You can hear a "Consistent" Signal on 105.9 MHz in the Mountain Island Area of Charlotte, at least when I am in the mobile car. Other areas of Charlotte will not get the chance to Tune In. Probably a "Usable" Signal in both Gaston and Cleveland Counties as well, but those have been untested as of this writing.

Good Quality Audio though from what I heard --- Sounded great on 3 Meters yesterday. Steve.

This is indeed a "translator" for WAIZ - and the power limit for such is 250 watts, so they can never increase. I believe LPFMs can transmit up to 1000 watts. Below is a link to the FCC listings for FMs licensed to Hickory. The list sorts by frequency from low to high. If you look at 99.3, you will see how an LPFM is listed (WLRZ-LP for Lenoir-Rhyne College). WAIZ's sister AM (WNNC) also has a translator at 101.3 - which battles co-channel interference to the SW from the WOHS translator in Shelby. Just last week, WOHS applied to change its translator frequency to 101.5 to help curtail the interference. Also on this FCC Hickory FM page, an entry for a translator at 102.3 can be seen. This will be the translator for News/Talk 1290 WHKY.

Ironic that you bring up 101.3 MHz. I had to travel into Center City, Charlotte this past weekend. I've been away from Charlotte for several months, doing Contract Work up in Concord. I discovered that WNCW now has a Transponder on 101.3 MHz in Center City itself (05/16/2016 IIRC). Looks like it is 80 Watts. Unless you're in Center City itself, WNCW's Native Transmission on 88.7 MHz is actually more powerful than its Transponder. More irony if you ask me. After I got home this past Saturday, I discovered the other Transponders you brought up. So now we add 101.3 MHz from 28203/28204 to the list of Transponders on 101.3 MHz. Fortunately down in South Carolina WWDM is protected (for just... now?) against any more LPFM/Transponders coming up on the Airwaves. Steve.

We observed Oldies being played on 101.5 MHz as of yesterday, so the application to change frequency must have been granted by the FCC.

Good music! I should have known I was on the wrong side of the divide that I cross on Highway 49 in Concord. I was actually north of Highway 29, still in Concord. But the music didn't last. I kept picking up other stations and finally changed stations. My objective was to hear Christmas music on WEZV in Myrtle Beach. But of course that wasn't going to happen until I got on the right side of that divide, and by that time I forgot.

And this is all about 630 AM.

I can't remember all the songs I heard yesterday but this is a partial list. Some I had to look up and I'm not absolutely sure they are right.

Beach Boys "Surfin' U.S.A."
Chuck Berry "No Particular Place to Go"
Booker T and the MGs "Green Onions"
Freddie Cannon "Tallahassee Lassie"
Coasters "Along Came Jones"
Dion and the Belmonts "Where Or When"
Fleetwoods "Come Softly to Me"
Connie Francis "Where the Boys Are"
Brenda Lee "I Want to Be Wanted"
Martha and the Vandellas "Jimmy Mack"
Johnny Mathis "The Twelfth of Never"
Patience and Prudence "Tonight You Belong to Me"
Gene Pitney "Mecca"
Platters "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
Elvis Presley "Hard Headed Woman"
Ritchie Valens "Donna"
Dinah Washington "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes"
Lenny Welch "Since I Fell for You"
Andy Williams "Lonely Street"

The 1967 "Jimmy Mack" is the only song on this list I remember hearing when it was current. I'm 66 and started listening to Top 40 radio heavily in 1966. How could a station attract any advertising today with such a moldy playlist?

Every hour is sponsored by a different advertiser. Also, there are individual commercials. I heard one several times for a big band concert.

I forgot "I Almost Lost My Mind" but don't know whether it was Pat Boone or Ivory Joe Hunter.

Also Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World".

When we drive from Knoxville to Marion, NC, we can have WTMT, Weaverville (Asheville market) on and when we reach a certain spot, the WAIZ translator comes in, but disappears in a couple of miles and WTMT is back

That's weird. I mentioned here at least once that when WTMT first came on the air, WEZV in Myrtle Beach was off the air for a few minutes and just a few miles from the beach I was hearing WTMT.

I like and know all the songs on this list and I'm 69, I started listening to top 40 radio in 1958 and actually had 45's from back then.

That's not the point though, I like lots of music I discovered either through my parents, the stations I worked for, or on my own. To me a good song is a good song, it doesn't matter where or when it was recorded. Sometimes it can even provide little aural history of the time period which I find very interesting.
