CBS5/3TV simulcast

All apologies if I missed this...I don't watch 3 or 5's news, but I'm visiting my mom, and we just put on Ch 5 at 5.

Jared and Lindsey said they are one news organization, and now their broadcasts will be the same. Is this new? I know they merged, but I thought they had separate broadcasts.
It's a little confusing; some reporters say "3TV;" some say "CBS 5."

Thanks, my mom is gettin' up there, and she was a little confused!

That...or she was secretly worried that her imaginary boyfriend Sean McLaughlin was going away! ;-)

It was bound to happen eventually, after 3 was purchased by Meredith (CBS5's owners). We predicted it here, but it just took a while to actually happen. Your Mom may (or may not) have noticed, but reporters, sports anchors, and to a limited extent weather anchors have been showing up on both stations on a more regular basis.

Tonight was the first time they did a true simulcast. If Wake Up Arizona doesn't start doing significantly better in the ratings, I'm thinking that they will simulcast GMAZ on CBS5. Yetta and Heidi can rejoin GMAZ! ;)

I guess Kim Quintero (weekend GMAZ weather) will no longer have to work weekend evenings anymore. After all, it was a LONG shift!

UPDATE: CBS5's FB page says that one hour of weekend GMAZ will be broadcast on CBS5. As I check the Cox TV guide, it appears that it will be the 6am to 7am hour of weekend GMAZ (at least on Sundays).

NOPE, she did not notice...she only cares about Sean! LOL ;-)

Even more confusing, Sunday Night's 10pm newscast was CBS5 News graphics/music labeled on 3 as "CBS5 on 3TV". They really need some sort of common branding.

Saturdays too from 7:00-8:00am.

The way I see this, at least right now, is GMAZ from 6:00-10:00am on 3TV with KPHO carrying it from 7:00-8:00am Sat. and 6:00-7:00am Sun.

Both keep their own brandings during early-evenings with 3TV keeping their own at 9:00pm and CBS 5 keeping their own for the 10:00pm simulcast.

That was not true on Saturday evening. I didn't see the 5pm newscasts, but from 5:30pm to 7pm, they were all 3TV branding (regardless of being shown on 3 or 5) and I believe the 10pm Saturday newscast had 3TV branding as well (although I may have been tired and confused by that point). It almost makes me want to go back to 12 News...

The Saturday 10pm *was* 3-branded, as if things weren't confusing enough.

Having the 3TV branding is probably better than the CBS 5 branding, considering that 3TV has always been a much stronger station than KPHO 5/CBS 5 ever was.

And I think KSAZ 10 is the strongest station in the Phoenix market overall with 3TV somewhere on top, KNXV in the middle and KPHO/KPNX being severely weak.

If the 3TV branding overtakes CBS 5 on all newscasts seen on CBS 5, I will not be surprised at all. I like to hear "3TV" anyways because TV is always in the middle of your living room... KTVK

KTVK got its call letters because founder/Senator/Governor Ernest McFarland said "TV will be our middle name."

You raise a good point in terms of branding/recognition as a news organization. However, it would be nice to actually see newscast ratings by time period. Since we rarely see them, I'm assuming that no one station is dominant in all or most time periods at this point.

But lets be honest... KPNX has collapsed recently and KPHO has never been good. KNXV has stayed up somewhat and KSAZ/KTVK has always been strong. But by comparison, KTVK has and always will be stronger than KPHO has even been or was.

Again, I agree with you. All I'm saying is the ratings are a great indicator of how the branding is doing. KPNX is a great example. When I first got here 12 years ago, KPNX was top-rated and known for quality news (i.e. "12 Stands for Local News"). Now, the branding and ratings have decreased dramatically.

I'm old enough to remember KOOL-TV 10, so I remember when KTVK's news was a joke. 10 and 12 were dominant.

Then 3 got tired of losing and hired 10's brain trust. "Newschannel 3" owned news in Phoenix for a long time and even if they didn't win outright when all the affiliations swapped they were strong.

When 3 lost its ABC affiliation, news was the still best thing on KTVK's schedule (and making them a s--tload of money), which is why they added additional newscasts when they became independent.

15 had no news department until maybe the last year they were Fox. They launched a quick paced "no chitchat more news" format that I personally liked but went against all TV news norms and they aggressively hired some of the best in the valley to staff their newsroom to get it launched. When Fox bought 10 and Scripps made its deal for ABC, they moved more towards a traditional newscast. But since they had hired experienced photogs and desk people, even if most of the on air talent was new they knew what they were doing.

5 had a small news department as an independent and produced a 9PM newscast, so while they weren't as new to producing news as 15 was, they also had to ramp up in a hurry when they landed CBS because they needed to crank out more stories more often.

End result of all the networks swapping around: 12 did well because they were the only station that didn't change. They were at the top of the market before it became chaos. Everybody else had to find their way. But when I come home and watch 12 these days, everybody looks and talks like they moved to the Valley a week ago. And 12's branding is simply plugging their logo into the current TEGNA "this is home" package.

My elderly mother has a schedule that she follows where she flips between 12, 10, 5, and 15 for various newscasts around the clock (and the occasional 3) so I see lots of news when I come home. (keep your hands off the remote and quiet down, the weather is coming on...) 12's news isn't as good as I remember it. 5 has improved. 15 is good. 10 is probably the least Fox-like Fox O&O (although today you see some of that Fox slant come in). 3 before Meridith was mostly new grads (and let's face it, when I was offered work there the money was terrible, so that's what you get). Mom hates most of the news talent on every station, but she's so far out of the demo, that's probably a good thing... :)
