WFAN to Increase Local Hockey Coverage for 2016-17

http://news.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n33381

Specifically this is for the Islanders and New Jersey Devils.

30 games on The Fan is a step up in visibility for the Isles, who have been stuck on a college station for several years, but the rest of the schedule will be on Salem's WNYN 970, The Answer. Christian preaching and pro sports play-by-play is an odd combination. Do any of Salem's other Christian stations carry play-by-play? How about their right-wing news/talk stations?

Pretty sure that The Answer is mainstream conservative talk. Basically, putting play by play on a talk station brings $ to the station. Salem is no different that other broadcasters that they need $ to keep the stations on the air.

With 50 games going to 970 which has a much worse nighttime signal than 91.5 FM where they were last year, I don't get how this is an upgrade.

WPIT in Pittsburgh was carrying Robert Morris University football and basketball, along with
high-school football games.

Figured "The Answer" would have to be a religious station. Guess that shows one can't assume anything. Oops.

The line between evangelicalism and the GOP is pretty blurry...

As for the hockey, Salem as a rule won't pay for programming that isn't their own, but they'll rarely turn down the opportunity for someone to pay them for airtime.

They seem to run a fair amount of college sports. Penn State requires stations that want their football games to clear basketball as well; in Philly that's a deal-breaker for WIP and WPEN, so Salem's talker WNTP has been taking both for some years. They also air some of the local Philly college hoops (St. Joseph's, Drexel, maybe others), mostly on WNTP but with some games on their preaching station, WFIL. I don't think they've ever done a whole lot of pro sports though. They used to get some 76ers overflow, but that ended when the Sixers moved to WPEN with a guarantee of full-season coverage. I suspect that Salem doesn't want to air alcohol or gambling ads and the pros don't want to give up those potential sources of revenue.

The Answer (a Salem format replicated around the country, including here in Pittsburgh) is conservative political talk. Salem also locally has WPIT, which is essentially brokered preachers. And WORD-FM which is a mix of preaching and Christian music.

I don't agree with the other poster that Evangelicalism and the GOP are one and the same. Though there is some cross-promotion with their religious stations The Answer here sticks pretty much to political discussions.
