Skagit County Radio

Anyone familiar with current status of KWLE in Anacortes? Sounds like they are running 100% automation (or bird?) and TOH listed an Oak Harbor simulcast. FCC.gov (which has now become the most user-unfriendly web site on the planet) suggests they are owned by the same people who own that 550 station in Blaine. A drive-by the studio shows a residential real estate sign and obviously lots of boxes are packed inside. They are sharing some talent with the KBRC crew with regard to news. Has there ever been consideration of combining Mount Vernon + Anacortes to one owner?

In any case...all the sampling I did this week in Mt. Vernon + Anacortes revealed some interesting radio! Well done hometown style programming.

Last I heard KRPA was simulcasting 1340. If I've got my history right, KRPA 1110 was doing South Asian programming targeting Vancouver or Victoria until the CRTC forced them off with 1550 and 1600. From there, it appears the station went to a simulcast of 1340, while 1550 and 1600 continued in defiance of the CRTC.

KWLE/KRPA has been simulcasting for over a year, maybe two. They're automated, not sure where their newsguy Glen Harris is now. I believe the owners who bought them a few years ago were called New Age Media (something) and the plan was to use both signals for South Asian programming. They had a construction permit to crank up KRPA to 9,000 watts day/400 watts night. All of that imploded with the CRTC ruling/warning and they withdrew. KRPA also has an FM translator in 99.5 in Oak Harbor. KVRI and KRPI are still in business as usual.

KBRC/KAPS are on bird. They're usually listened to by locals for whatever sports they air. The rest of the time, people in Skagit with a radio listen to whatever comes in on FM.

Most Skagit County residents probably listen to KAFE, KISM, CKKQ, one of the Vancouver CHRs or KPLK-88.9. Seattle gets too static-filled up there, especially north of Burlington.
How did KRPA get that FM translator? I guess CFOX isn't too strong in northern Island County? I know in Clinton/Langley, it's usually KDDS on 99.3.

Or listening to Country Q 103.3 KMCQ
