AM Frequency of the Week: 999

Up the dial five positions this week to 990. The first of three adjacents that match our criteria. So.....what are y'all hearing these days on 990?

This one is really easy for me. Days, its all splatter from local WMVP (1000). Nights, WMVP throws less juice at me, so the splatter is a non-issue. 990 thus produces a very reliable CBW from Winnipeg. Alone and one of the strongest and most dependable skywave signals around here. On the rare occasions when I do hear something underneath, I haven't been able to identify whatever it is.

Same thing here about 30 miles east of Cyberdad. WMVP throws a lot of slop my way and during the day that's all I hear.
At night I can null some of it and get a reliable CBW, sometimes strong.

999 khz? That's a European/Asian frequency. You meant 990, right?

In Yakima, WA:
Days is just splatter from KTCR-980 (ESPN Deportes).
Nights is usually CBW, but XECL Mexicali is also common (La Rockola).
Also heard on 990: KATD Pittsburg, CA (Spanish News/Talk), KTMS Santa Barbara, CA (News/Talk) and KTHH Albany, OR (Was Classic Country, now comedy).

There are a few wish-list stations on this frequency: XET Monterrey (which is 50KW and should be heard in very good conditions); KRKS Denver (Religious) and KTKT Tucson (ESPN Deportes). Both should be possible on a good sunrise session.

SF Bay Area: KATD Pittsburg, CA daytime. This station managed to move its transmitter to ESE of Sacramento a few years back while keeping the city of license Pittsburg. Nighttimes mostly KTMS Santa Barbara.

990 In Northwest Arkansas -

Daytime - KRMO, Cassville, MO

Nighttime - CBW, Winnipeg - (Usually)

And recently heard at night - KFCD, Farmersville, TX - (September 15, 2016)

An interesting game of musical chairs is scheduled to happen in southeast Florida.
A company owns stations on 990, 1020, and 1040.
In Miami, 990 is moving to 1040.
In Kendal, 1020 is moving to 990.
In Boynton, 1040 is moving to 1020.
Six new directional patterns will be engineered, but no new towers will be erected.
The Miami and Kendal stations will both benefit, while the Boynton station will suffer slightly.

Odd .... here in my second DX 'home', I don't see the Philadelphia station logged!

Indeed logged here in NE PA are CKIS Montreal (taped) and a 'WCMF' from Rochester NY.

Olden days back near Kennedy Airport in Queens, overnight DX mostly, 990 was odd. WIBG Philly used to pull half their signal in, away from WINS 1010 and Providence 990. One overnight, some station was testing with tones and Elgart tunes like 'Caravan'. They finally IDed as WVSC Somerset PA. I mean, they were BURYING WIBG for a half an hour.
WHOO from Orlando IDed once, overnight. That must've been Auroral conditions.

In Pittsburgh it is generally CBW at night. Perhaps the most distant AM DX I can get on a regular basis.

During the days it is WLLI in Somerset, PA, about sixty miles away.

Daytime is semi-local KAML in Kennedy, a Spanish-language religious station. I still miss its earlier incarnation as classic country “KAML Country.” There’s also some splatter from almost-local KBIB on 1000.

At night it can get like a graveyard frequency at times, and there’s a bit of splatter from XEOY on 1000. XET is the most dominant, with KFCD (Spanish-language Christian) sometimes popping up and overtaking it. Talk station KWAM in Memphis can occasionally be heard weakly underneath. If I aim NW/SE, KAML can usually be heard with a weak to fair signal, and another news/talker, KSVP in Artesia, NM, sometimes comes up for a bit.

I’ve heard WGSO (also news/talk) in New Orleans just a few times, and I’ve heard Radio Guamá in Cuba once.

Around sunrise, KWAM comes up noticeably stronger as does KSVP, which can take over KAML for a while.

At sunset, KFCD comes up with a fairly good signal if I aim away from KAML.

South of Minnesota River (Suburban Mpls)

Daytime - nothing (maybe some bleedover of KKMS 980)

Nightime - CBW usually
