Is 790 Going All Korean?

A rumor is out there that WQXI-AM, once a legendary Top-40 station, is going all Korean. If true, Entercom will be doing the smart thing by leasing it out.

Get ready for all K-pop all the time.

Such is the way of AM radio these days.

Will they end up getting the 101.1 translator back up and running? I have always thought that 101.1 is translating WQXI and not WSTR and would eventually broadcast whatever is playing on AM790.

I see in the FCC database that Mr. Park's lease on 1050 in Conyers expires in December. So he'll now own his station.

790 will better cover the Korean population, but with only about 50,000 Koreans in Atlanta, I wonder how the station can turn a decent profit. But Mr. Parks has been doing it for multiple years so I guess he knows.

Good point...but with a unique format aimed at a dedicated audience, he can price his inventory accordingly.

Is Mr. Park a US citizen? If not, this could be the first sale under the new FCC foreign ownership rules.

If you consider that the Atlanta Korean population is about the same as the total population in Valdosta, what you have is the possibility of a nicely profitable smaller "market" station with no local competition for its target audience.

The Valdosta metro has 140,000 people, but several stations vie for them. Mr. Park has been doing this for a while so he must know he can make money.

On Air With Dead Carrier

Station has good coverage day & night thanks to the transmitter's ground being located on Peachtree Creek. Looks like he got a good deal compared to the Asian who bought WAZX for $1.5M and got no night time coverage.

I was very warm last April 1. What caller am I?

99X Flips To KPOP 98.9

Only months after flipping from Classic Country, to Christmas, to Soft AC, then resurrecting the Alternative 99X brand, CUMULUS MEDIA'S 98.9 W255CJ makes another format change: this time to K-POP (Korean Pop) as KPOP 98.9. "We're so excited to be stunting Girls Generation's "Gee" for 104 hours!" said Sean Shannon, Vice President/Market Manager for CUMULUS MEDIA ATLANTA. "Even more so, to be debuting Monday, April 4th a live real-time translation version in Korean of THE BERT SHOW that will be simulcast nightly in South Korea on Seoul's 91.9 MBC FM4U."

Don't forget Oldies and Christian Contemporary on that frequency, also.

$850,000 take the money and run. For station that will do better serving a niche market. The options for a mass appeal format (and on an AM) are limited. I don't see it a as a core asset for Entercom. I would also imagine the noise level on an AM in Atlanta at night is awful. A four tower array at 1KW better be well maintained to get a decent signal after sunset.

It looks like Atlanta hold the record (or close to) having the most translators. One again, very few format or programming choices available.

At 320 meters AMSL, and with a centralized city population. It is a perfect market for them.

Then again, that leaves them with a single station in a major market. Might they sell the FM to CBS to make their portfolio more efficient?

Based on Star 94-1's recent hiring moves, it doesn't look like Entercom is planning to sell it. I wonder if it will be the other way around, that Entercom will purchase the CBS stations in Atlanta.

Atlanta and LA have one thing in common - if you can't make money with a good FM signal, you couldn't sell a ho on a troop train.

IMHO it all depends how CBS will get rid of their radio stations. They might sell clusters or the whole thing but the financing would be a bear and I am not sure even a Morris trust would be tax free. Remember Citadel buying ABC radio? i doubt there are lenders knocking on CBS's door to do a deal on the radio properties. I bet there will be a "tax free" spin off to shareholders. Then later buy it back like Cox bought back Cox radio.

790 is still simulcasting 94.1. I wonder how long until the LMA goes into effect.

Also, will I see a Korean sign on the transmitter shack when I look out my window?

ATL Radio Korea is buying Quixie outright, not LMAing it.

On a related note, how is CBS doing with WAOK? I know that WAOK is getting slightly better ratings than 790 was, and fits its niche (urban news/talk) well. But I wonder how the bottom line looks. It's also got a night pattern that isn't really suited for an ethnic format other than urban (Vietnamese, maybe? Lots of Vietnamese on the south side)...
