The Next Frontier: 93.7

93.7 MHz in Phoenix is nothing. It's mostly KRQQ here. But it looks like iHeart has some plans in Phoenix.

They have a CP mod to move a translator from Yuma (K229DB) to South Mountain on 93.7 which will relay KOY 1230. Could they switch KFYI and KOY's AM signals and then finally give KFYI a true FM?

(And in the meantime, watch 103.1 for K278BS, which is being proposed as a 200-watter on North Mountain to complement KIHP)

KOY 12~Thirty was eligible to apply for a translator during the first round of bidding. And wasn't one of the rules you had to keep the AM and Translator paired for four years? If that's the case, then it would probably be very difficult to switch the translator to KFYI 5~Fifty. Now that all the Class A & B stations can apply for a translator, it'll be interesting to see who goes after what. This market just doesn't have enough clutter on the FM band!

KIHP's translator is very, very directional. The big news for 13~Ten is they have a CP in to go non-D from the KDUS site, 3.4k day and .26k night. So this means they'll be leaving the company of Ernesto Miranda and Waylon Jennings to become tenants of Mother Hubbard.

The point is that I could see I <3 Debt move all the higher-rated Ancient Modulation stuff to 1230 from 550 and then make it 1230 AM/93.7 FM.

Oh here's another new proposal: 105.1 to Mesa/xmtr at Fountain Hills (K201CQ) as a move-in from Prescott. K201CQ is owned by Cedar Cove Broadcasting and carries Family Radio in Prescott. Proposed new source is KFNN. Is 99.3 blocked by terrain or something there?

Highly unlikely. More likely that 1230 will no longer be a dumping ground of infomercials and 3rd rate talk shows and pick up some kind of flanker music format instead. If you took the current lineup off of 550, what would you replace it with that would make more money? Besides, if you're going to challenge 92.3 on FM, you're not going to do it with 250 watts.

Contrary to popular belief, translators and LPFMs do not have magical powers that make them equivalent to 100kw flamethrowers.

I agree with John, a translator won't be enough to cover the valley so they will still need 550. I see a jock less music format, maybe the rock format the have on 96.9 hd2. That format could pull some audience away from Kupd and would probably be a good combo sell with Kyot grabbing some upper male demos and the new format getting the younger demos.

Bring back the soft pop of KOY. 1230 had good ratings (yeah, i know old demos) with that until they blew it up. Would also compliment the AM HD. They got a big nothing now.

Well here's a "what if" scenario from the geniuses wearing the fezzes. What if 12~Thirty went into simulcast with 5~Fifty? KOY could then feed their translator with KOY/KFYI programming and give both stations a presence on FM. Problem solved (if indeed there was a problem).

You could do that.

But you could make more money if you spun the wheel of Premium Choice music feeds and plugged it into 1230 to flank one of your FMs that could need a hand.

I'll assume that owning the "God's Waiting Room" demo aside, 550's billing would be constant no matter where you aired the content.

It's not so much that the translator is going to bill a bunch, it just has to hurt someone else to let Mix, Kiss, or KNIX rank higher and let them bill more.

True dat. But given the vitriol emanating from 36th Street, south of Southern, it just might be ownership of "The Purgatory Waiting Room". Rather doubtful that I ♥ Debt would put anything but music on an FM translator.

The 70 dBu contour doesn't come close to Phoenix. Exhibit 30, figure 1: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS...?appn=101720763&qnum=5290&copynum=1&exhcnum=1

In order to protect KMGN and KDKB, that Wickenburg signal doesn't go very far.

I suspect that the end game is to sign it on and then hop it to a different frequency, as KFMA showed that trying to rimshot Phoenix on 93.7 doesn't work.

Speaking of the next frontier — or, as it were, frontera...

-K294CW 106.7 (KASA) is on air.

-The WTFDA DB (which gets its data from the FCC) lists a new one: K298CK 107.5 on Shaw Butte, to relay KNUV 1190.

But wait, there's more!

K231CJ Nogales -> North Mountain 96.1 - KXEG

K260CJ Nogales -> Fountain Hills 99.1 - KHEP

The FM band is getting a brown cloud pretty fast.

It's a Habob and we're pulling the Gremlin off the road, turning off the lights, and hoping the winds push these translators south of la frontera!

So does this mean the 99.1 LPFM in Mesa that can't keep a format for more than a week is finally hanging it up?

Nope. Translators I think get priority over LPFMs, as ridiculous as it sounds.

FM translators/boosters are extremely rare in Mexico despite the terrain. By my count there are 13 of them. One is in Sonora, but I have no idea where. The others are two in Zacatecas, two in Jalisco, one in Veracruz and seven in Quintana Roo.
