Alt 1049

Giving a perspective from an Alternative fan from outside of the area (Atlanta) but from someone who use to live in St. Louis for a few years.

For starters, The Point may have it's faults but in terms of striking that chord between alternative and active rock, I can't think of a radio station that does it better than the point.

During the day, the appear to lean harder with a little less new music. During the evening, the tend to lean newer and more pure alternative/indie. Every third weekend or so, they are all 90s which plays it all from Korn to The Cure.

Their library is impressive compared to iheart & cumulus alternative station.

Alt 1049 cannot compete. For starters, they play the same tired alt rock from 2013 with little new music and lots of mainstream stereotypical rock from the 90s. No deep cuts like The Point. True, they have Woody in the morning which may make for interesting morning radio but I think St. Louis is done hearing Milkey Chance every hour. Point took care of that in 2013 when Stolen Dance came out after all.

Alt 1049 may have a few local dj's (doubt it) but Iheart is cheap and is not local at all. Point will beat them on that point.

If Iheart wanted to compete, they would have been better to try active rock (not that stupid man up rock which is not active rock). Instead, they tried to compete with The Point but moving further to the alternative/indie side (you won't hear any active rock tracks on Alt 1049).

So let's see: The Point is harder than Alt; The Point plays a better variety of 90s than Alt; The Point plays new music before Alt (harder end alternative and indie); The Point is more devoted to new music and older music depending on time of day. All in all, Alt 1049 can't compete. I'll be surprised if they pull 1 share.... Okay maybe 1.5.

They've only been on the air a little over three weeks now. They won't even have a PD starting until December. How can you make a prediction on this station only after such a short time? You really cannot. The station really doesn't even have a full identity.

Because I have been following Iheart alternative stations for years. Have one locally in Atlanta. PD's really lack any power. Majority of all iheart alt stations across the country literally sound the same with a few nuances. The only one that comes close to sounding different is Channel 933 in Denver and even that station is more conservative than The Point. You can cover up the station name and owner for most playlists and tell who owns the station. Cumulus will lean harder while iheart will be less adventurous (more familiar). I'm sure it's the case with Cumulus but with Iheart, there is much more testing/research done on new music before it's introduced to the playlist. PD at the local station has changed hands over three times and not once have I noticed a notible difference. Will give this station 6 months and will revisit this post but I'm telling you, from an alternative perspective, Iheart is very predictable.

--- but with Iheart, there is much more testing/research done on new music before it's introduced to the playlist.

There is no successful way of testing new music other than playing it many times on the air and then asking listeners how much they like it.

If there were a testing method for still-unplayed songs, record companies would never release a stiff.

It's only been four months but still not seeing any movement with this station. Listening to the playlist five months after launch, nothing sticks out as standing out any differently from most iheartradio alternative stations which tend not to be adventurous and very hits based.

Going to be very difficult to go after The Point since The Point has positioned itself as a alternative/active hybrid and leans in one direction or another depending on what is popular during that time. Right now, The Point has the indie covered on Sunday evenings. Has the 90s covered at 5 and once a weekend each month. Has the harder stuff covered especially during the day and has local stuff covered.
