America's Thanksgiving Parade

It was the Detroit parade, which for many years (in segments) was a staple of CBS's All American Thanksgiving Parade, and joining segments of:

the Macy's parade (covered from Columbus Circle, not Herald Square),
the Philadelphia parade (covered from the Eakins Oval in front of the Art Museum [Rocky] steps)*
a Toronto parade taped 2 weeks earlier
and
the Liliouokalani (sp!) parade taped two months earlier in Honolulu.

I miss William Conrad anchoring from his fireplace... :(

*The Philly parade down the stately Benjamin Franklin Parkway (Philadelphia's cultural main street) is an institution antedating Macy's by a few years, and was sponsored for many years by Gimbels department stores. Gimbels' Center City store was at 8th and Market Sts. before becoming an anchor of the Gallery across the street. Gimbels followed other Philly dept. stores Snellenburgs, John Wanamakers, and Lit Bros. into the sunset (each for its own reason).

Something that I always thought was odd with CBS’s coverage of Thanksgiving parades in the 80’s and early 90’s was how they would use people from their daytime and prime time soaps as hosts. If this is supposed to be a family oriented event, why would they want to use people from their least family oriented shows to host? Later in the 90’s it appears CBS started to use people from their sitcoms and other dramas, and later they switched to using morning show and sports people, which makes more sense to me.

This was aired on KAPP Yakima/KVEW Tri-Cities. Didn't watch most of it however.
