New 87.7 Authorized For Houston

So 'splain this to me...

A new low-power digital TV station will be permitted to run an analog aural carrier?

I thought the loophole for the 'franken-FM' stations was for existing analog LPTV stations that had not flash cut to digital yet.

If you read the narrative from the applicant you will see this is for a specific event between 1-28-17 and 2-3-17. It appears they are asking for analog facilities during this period.
I don't see any indication that the applicant will refile for continuous operations or more transmit power.
 
This is a temporary station which will operate the week leading up to the Super Bowl in Houston. The coordinates place the transmitter at Minute Maid Park. Probably has something to do with all the festivities that will be held downtown.

Licensee is "Live Sports Radio" which, according to their website, provides in-venue audio of sporting events via low power FM transmitters. So it would seem this might be a temporary "Franken-FM." Their website is http://livesportsradio.com

Station is only 5 watts at 18 meters. Will be interesting to see how far it goes, and whether there is any video component to the transmission.
 
When did KPRC-TV stop simulcasting on 87.7?

In the 90s, it seemed like a lot of NBC affiliates simulcasted on 87.7FM.

Corpus Christi's NBC affiliate did and you could hear it in San Antonio.

New Orleans's NBC affiliate did and you could hear it in Baton Rouge.

KPRC-TV never simulcast on 87.7.

WDSU-TV/New Orleans was channel 6. KRIS-TV/Corpus Christi was channel 6.
The audio carrier for channel 6 is 87.75 FM. It was happy coincidence for any analog TV station on channel six that they could promote listening to their audio on FM radios that happened to go below 88 FM.
 
Bumping this thread, as we are now in the authorized timeframe for K06SL to operate. Anyone in the vicinity of downtown Houston seeing anything on Channel 6 or hearing any audio on 87.7 ? Never was really clear if this would be a digital LPTV or an analog Franken-FM.
 
No, I have been checking on that station and not then I will work in the Heights close to I 10 and Shepherd.

Yes I remember discovering this on my portable AM/FM radio sometime in the early 80s! I can't remember what channel it was here in Houston that you could hear on 87.7. I want to say either 2 or 13.
I do remember driving into Corpus to visit family and being able to tune in channel 6 on the radio.

As already discussed on this thread, neither Channels 2 or 13 ever broadcast on 87.7. Listeners in Houston would have heard either KFDM in Beaumont, KRIS in Corpus Christi, or KCEN in the Waco market, all of which were Channel 6 TV stations in the analog days.

KFDM is CBS...not sure what KRIS was...I THINK KCEN is also CBS....
 
Miss the days of Analog Channel 6 equaling 87.7FM

It's too bad you can't hear a broadcast channel on 87.7 anymore.

I miss being able to hear local news on the radio, as you'd hear it on television.

KVNN in Victoria does a simulcast of Newschannel 25's 10pm news telecast.
 
The 87.9 or 87.7 NBC was out of Temple if you listed long enough would hear a business advertising out the Waco Temple Killeen area
 
While driving close to downtown yesterday evening all I heard on 87.7 was spotty reception of the Franken-FM in Beaumont. No idea if K06SL is actually on the air or what the station is broadcasting.
