Would the Houston Texans' Upper Management be Upset if...

The New Orleans Saints Radio Network added Beaumont's KLVI 560AM to their list of affiliates?

They would be well within their rights to do so, as the tower is 85 miles east of the Houston City Limits (75 miles or closer is prohibited by the NFL), and it is 15 miles west of the Louisiana-Texas State Line.

What say you?

I'm pretty sure any team can have any affiliate anywhere. The Saints could probably have a Houston Affiliate if there was a demand for it. Then again, the NFL is really weird when it comes to broadcast media and I have no idea what the regulations are.

It mostly comes down to the value of the team to the market, I'd think the triangle would be Houston fanbase territory. I would doubt anyone in Houston would mind or care since it wouldn't affect any meaningful advertising dollars.

Nope. KFNC tried to affiliate with the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network about 8 years ago and the Texans stopped it from happening.

As far as Saints on KLVI is concerned, I doubt the Texans would care. Beaumont is a small market, and they probably wouldn't waste time putting the brakes on it. Nobody is listening to KLVI in Houston except for a handful of DXers on this board anyway.

You have NFL teams like the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens that are 40 miles apart. Houston and Beaumont are 90 miles apart.

Houston is AFC, while New Orleans is NFC. I'd say it's OK.

I thought 97.5 actually had it for awhile?

As for Beaumont, The 'boys have KLLS 1300 AM so I suppose the Saints could too.

I remember one of the Clear Channel AMs in Houston running Cowboy games with billboards near Reliant reading "Real Texans Play Here." But it's probably been at least 10 years.

Texans and the Cowboys have an agreement that the DCRN cannot be heard in Houston....92.5 had the Boys and CC wanted to move them to KLVI...NOPE! No way under the agreement...but instead of moving them back to 92.5, CC dropped them...go figure

Yes, there is not a 75-mile rule in the NFL as far as radio affiliates. I believe it's 50 (with some exceptions for the dual-team market, Ravens/Redskins, etc.). Here in Ohio, the Cleveland Browns Radio Network has an affiliate in Dayton, 55 miles north of Cincinnati, and the Bengals Radio Network has an affiliate in Massillon, 55 miles south of Cleveland.
I think it was 2006 when KFNC briefly carried the Cowboys. I know it was not 2007, 2008 or 2009 as I lived in Houston at that time and basically the only option to hear the Cowboys network was WOAI. I tried a few times in the Bay Area to hear the Cowboys' Beaumont affiliate (think it was on 1450 AM) and never picked it up despite the salt water between us and them.
As for the original question, if KLVI were to carry the Cowboys or Saints, I can't imagine anything could be done to stop that although the Texans certainly would not like it. I also would not say "nobody" in Houston listens to KLVI. It has a tremendous signal in the area I am sure at least sone Houstonians listen to fairly regularly.

KFNC never carried the DCRN....they DO carry another network that does cover the Cowboys games but it does not promote it as THE Cowboy network nor has promos about the Cowboys like the DCRN does. KLVI could NOT carry the DCRN due to the Cowboys agreements with the Texans.....Saints is another matter.....I dont recall Cowboys being on 1450...they were on 92.5 for a long time....1450 suffers from a poor ground system (copper thieves have ravaged it)...

These threads say differently, that KFNC did in fact carry the Cowboys for part of the 2006 season until the Texans put a stop to it:

http://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?466280-The-Cowboys-will-be-on-KFNC

Whether that was the real radio network with Brad Sham's call or Compass Media's national broadcasts of those games (which I am not even sure existed then), only a long-timer could confirm here.
As far as KLVI, again, I am not sure how the Texans could stop that seeing as KLVI is not a Houston station, although it is received very well there. If the Cowboys have acquiesced and said "we'll be on a crap signal in Beaumont so we don't interfere with the Texans," well, that definitely solves any issue.

Would be great to have the Saints Radio Network affiliate that gets a signal into Houston. KNGT 99.5 Lake Charles starts fading around Mont Belvieu and WWL 870's daytime signal fades near the east loop.

'm just not sure there's enough advertiser support for a Saints affiliate in TX.

I checked with Douglas at the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network.. he confirmed KFNC NEVER carried the DCRN.. that would have violated the agreement with the Texans which was in place LONG before 2006. The agreement is that the station carrying the DCRN cannot be heard in metro Houston depending on the signal contour. I was going to try to get KOLE as well but Sima wanted twice as much for it than what I bought 1300 for and it's signal gets into Houston during daylight hours so the Cowboys legal team said nope but 1300 was perfect
KFNC still carries Compass Media and they had the Cowboys game last Sunday.. ESPN was on 610 with the Cowboys as well but that's not the official DCRN so no violation of the agreement

It could happen in the Triangle, but probably nowhere else.
As far as the earlier posts, that is what it is but I did want to clear that up. Someone wasn't on the right page either 10 years ago or now so glad I asked.
I personally don't understand why Compass Media doesn't carry the hometown Dallas call, like they do with the Raiders. Oh well.
