Katie Couric returns to 'Today' as guest co-host

Katie Couric is returning to the anchor desk at NBC’s “Today” — for a one-week stint as co-host.

Couric will reunite with “Today’s” Matt Lauer during the week of Jan. 2. She will fill in for Savannah Guthrie, who is on maternity leave following the birth of her son earlier this month.

Couric became a household name during her tenure as co-anchor of “Today” from 1991 to 2006. Much of that run was alongside Lauer. She left NBC in 2006 to take the helm of the “CBS Evening News.”

It's not as if she really has much else going on. She's probably not getting paid much for this stint either.

When it comes down to it, Katie Couric will go down as the greatest newswoman ever. Only one who comes close is Barbara Walters. Barbara has so many 'firsts' but Katie was a star/held important positions at the 3 major networks.

I too disagree that Katie is "the greatest newswoman ever". No, not even close. Yes, she anchored the CBS Evening News for multiple years, but never got any traction there. Barbara Walters never got any traction either as a short-time anchor of ABC World News. However, Barbara turned that into a huge franchise on 20/20 and her Specials. Katie has done nothing to equal that.

Diane was good, Jane was even better, though she never became a network anchor. And for those of us a certain age, who can forget Jessica Savitch? She had all the skills to become a great anchor, but unfortunately had a lot of personal issues, IMO.
