KONO AM 860 Flips to 60's & 70's

KPPC 96.9 has never mentioned KONO. Remarks are from west side 96.9 that plays classic hits also

You're right it was not KPPC, it was KXTJ, badmouthing or name dropping other stations on air for not playing the certain kinds music of anymore and KONO was one of the stations they mentioned.

Speaking of obscure, the other day I heard No Time For You by The Commands, I never knew that was a local hit only, until I searched the internet some years ago and could not find it, I remember hearing it on KONO often in the 90's and 00's. I hope Roger Allen's incarnation of the Big 86 does well and sticks around for a while, the KRTH oldies station only lasted a year, before CBS pulled the plug.

They played Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs -Little Red Riding Hood over the weekend, have not heard that song in years!

Great station for those who like 60's & 70's. My only objection is the long stop sets for commercials. Since they are going to be a 60's & 70's station they should sound like one. There is no need for long stop sets. With the short songs there is no reason to not play two songs and a commercial, or two, and then another song or two and a commercial. I made a mix awhile ago with 60's & 70's music with commercials and station id's (WABC New York). There never were two songs in a row without commercial interruption and the pace was great. No thought of tune out. Now if KONO The Big 86 wants to spend a little money, throw in a DJ or two and the sound would be perfect.

The Big 86 has no place to go except up. 12+ ratings for CBS Sports Radio 860 were either .1 or .2 for 2016. The weekly coming on 2/1 and 2/8 should be very interesting.

Right you are. The San Antonio ratings just came out on the 26th for the "Holiday Book" and KONO AM was right at the bottom at.02, 12+. Interestingly KONO FM dropped to #3, behind 101.9 (Christmas music) and KROM (Regional Mexican). KROM had a 6.2 to KONO FM's 5.8. KQXT is to be expected at Christmas but for KROM to out perform KONO FM is a surprise. Maybe The Big 86 is drawing away listeners. We will see next month...

Advertisers typically don't take much stock in the Holiday book. Q-101.9 taking listeners from KONO while increasing its total share both via increased TSL and more brief sampling wouldn't be surprising in the least.

There are still a few songs pre 1975 on the KONO-FM playlist, some of which I've also heard on the KONO-AM station now. I wonder if the next time, KONO 101 updates it's playlist if it will lose those songs from 1967-1974 that are still there and replace them with more 80's maybe from 1985-1989, and maybe even introduce some early 90's music to the format.

The only reason to drop the pre-1975 songs would be if they no longer tested well with the audience KONO-FM is trying to reach. I wouldn't think KONO 101.1 would be airing those songs if they weren't popular with the 25-54 crowd, and the older music on 860 isn't going to appeal to much, if any, to that audience. Whether or not the station down the hall is playing certain songs is rarely a factor in determining a station's playlist. You segment the market and give that group what it wants.

What I suspect is that Cox is selling time that spans both stations. Buy on FM and get AM too. This would cover any loss from the FM to the AM plus give them a chance to get rid of the older 70's on FM, shift them to AM, and then move up to the 90's. Classic Hits have to keep evolving up decades as the years pass. I have always thought, however, that a 1968 song is a brand new song to a person born in 2001.

I wouldn't think there would be much loss from the FM to the AM. KONO 101.1 isn't targeting the 55+ crowd and is mostly playing songs that audience doesn't like. It may get some sampling from that crowd from time-to-time, but I can't imagine anybody stays for long. "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama comes on, and they're gone.

The notion that any song is new the first time you hear it isn't entirely false. However, today's teenagers know an oldie when they hear it. "Surfin' USA" isn't about anything anybody has talked about in decades, at least not in those terms. Oldies also have a different sound in general, and kids know it's not like the current stuff. It's no surprise to me that my 13 year-old niece can't relate to music like that.

True...KONO-FM out rating KQXT in 2nd week of January. 3rd weekly out tomorrow(2/15). KONO-FM will likely be #1 again, plus we'll have a better look at 86 KONO since it did not sign on till 6pm 1/13.

Of note: KONO-FM is already doing Bryan Adams- Everything I Do, I Do It For You (1991). Some songs from that year I can easily hear today on KONO: Amy Grant- Baby Baby, Extreme- More Than Words, Mariah- Someday, Timmy T- One More Try, Damn Yankees- High Enough. Insert Billboard Hot 100 Single Here______...

Well I am pleased that they made this change. Now another station I can listen to besides fighting the splatter all over 96.9 (which I am listening to their 1970's programming right now as I type this) KXTJ I got a good signal. I like it better than Majic 95.5's Super Songs of the 70's because that stopped at 7 pm when Delilah came on, KXTJ keeps the 70s on until 12 midnight, and sometimes the quiet storm even has good jams.

Monday through Saturdays I listen either to KONO AM or if I am out and about, I use the KONO app.

We are pretty spoiled here in San Antonio, if you come to look at it, we have the best TV stations and the best Radio stations one could wish for:

1. KXTJ (listen on Sunday's)
2. KPPC (listen to them at 6 pm and 7pm when on the NE Side)
3. KONO-AM (all over times)
4. KAHL (when a song comes on KONO I can't stand)
5. Antenna TV
6. Me-TV
7. Cozi-TV
8. Laff-TV
9. GetTV

KKMJ hasn't aired Delilah in roughly two years. I don't think it does Super Songs of the 70's anymore either, but I rarely listen to AC on weekends.

One of the nice things about Cox is that it believes in being on as many platforms as possible. Its stations are on most every major app. 86 KONO is on TuneIn and iHeartRadio, and the FM's are on the NextRadio app in addition to the stations' own apps.

Should have used the term now defunct Super Songs of the 70's. I didn't know KKMJ canned Delilah. KQXT did for a while and now she is back on.

I haven't been listening to Austin radio since I left Austin in mid 2014 with the exception of the Bob-FM app from time to time.

I know it's an old thread but I really like listening to this station, thanks to the iHeart app. There aren't that many real oldies stations left, so I'm scouring all over the country to catch stations. I have some personal faves and KONO 86 is in my list.

I Miss That Combo Now All You Will Get Is A Christian Channel That Should Stay On AM Blocking All 3 I Adore The Dallas Houston San Antonio Fight Along With 100.3 Same City 2 Country Stations Houston San Antonio And Jack FM Dallas But All The FCC Is Trying To Do Is Turn FM Into AM With All The Translator Clutter!!
