Old Chuck signal 97.7 going to Entercom

Have heard through the grapevine that Entercom will be taking the 97.7 signal after Chuck vacates it later this month.

It will be a translator under WFBC. The question is what for? The FCC forced Chuck to move to 99.5 if it wanted to maintain its current strength due to the crossover with a Georgia station.

So 97.7 will have a small range, presumably being mostly downtown Greenville.

Entercom already has The Block to flank FBC on the Urban side. So it will be interesting to see what they're planning with this one.

I just hope this move won't create interference for WBT on 99.3. I get strong, clear reception on my home radio, and the HD will also lock in. But car reception has already been wiped out since the Georgia station increased power on 99.3 late last year. But perhaps since WBT is a stronger signal than the translator, then maybe it won't be much of an issue. But I am just tired of all of these low power translator signals blocking the full power distant signals, and the FCC should not have allowed this. But I am sure someone is making money somewhere.

But WBT and WLNK radio stations are now in a trust until Beasley buys or determines a sale. So the future of WBT on 99.3 is a bit unclear anyway. And I can also receive the WBT simulcast on 107.9-HD2.

Fortunately I can still get WBT on 99.3 on my home radio, following the move of Chuck FM to 99.5. But sometimes the HD will drop out, and it did not do this before. But not a major issue I suppose for talk radio, although I still don't like interference. And still not sure there was a need for this move anyhow, as I don't think the Georgia station would cause problems for Chuck FM in Greenville.

The 97.1 translator in Spartanburg is the one being moved to 97.7 on Parris Mountain.

When is this supposed to occur? And what will they do with 97.1?

It would be nice if Entercom would use one of these translators to simulcast WLNK from Charlotte, which they have now acquired. Since WLNK now has LPFM interference on 107.9 in Greenville County, a translator would help them improve the coverage of one of their large market stations which previously had a clear signal. And would give coverage for Bob and Sheri which is nationally syndicated. Or perhaps put Bob and Sheri on 98.9 which is struggling.

I've seen this done, but mainstream AC is considered to be family-friendly. Which Bob and Sheri are not.

Well Magic 98.9 has gotten bland and boring. Perhaps they could move more towards Hot AC and add Bob and Sheri. But I know My 102.5 arguably already has that format. But perhaps Entercom could look at the WXRU interference issue since it now affects one of their stations WLNK.

Still nothing on 97.7 the old Chuck station. Does Entercom still have plans? Not sure why they want to move 97.1 as it seems to have a good signal, except when you get down towards Anderson County and The River from Atlanta starts to come in. And back in the day, 97.1 from Atlanta used to come in clear in Greenville, before 97.1 in Spartanburg emerged.

I would like to see Entercom simulcast WLNK on one of these translators, since 107.9 from Charlotte now suffers LPFM interference in Greenville County. I would like to be able to listen to Bob and Sheri in the car again.

I believe W246BU-FM moved from 97.7 to 97.1 and is now serving Spartanberg, rebroadcasting WORD-AM..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WORD_(AM)

The 97.7 translator in Greenville has signed on with ESPN Upstate programming. 97.1 is still on in Spartanburg, putting their two analog FM signals right together (it is also heard on WYRD 1330, WORD 950, and WFBC-HD2 93.7). The 105.9 translator is still on, but presumably will be used for something else.

For those keeping score, 97.7 Greenville moved to 99.5 (under the premise that the now-expired construction permit for 97.7 in Eatonton, GA would upgrade to 100kW near Athens and bump it), 97.1 Spartanburg moved to 97.7 Greenville (using the same facilities as the previous 97.7 signal), and 97.1 Greenwood moved to Spartanburg (using the former 97.1 facilities).

So does anyone know the story why Chuck moved? I thought it was forced to move because of interference complaints. But that can't be the case since 97.7 is back on the air.

I don't understand myself. My original understanding was that they were in fact forced to move due to coverage conflicts with the new station in GA.

Does the new station maybe have a slightly different coverage area using a different tower?

Or maybe the expiration of that contract for upping the wattage of the GA station opened it back up. Not sure what the deal is there -- if they changed th decision to increase their wattage.
