Looking for a radio

I need help in finding an FM radio that fits my simple needs.

This is to be used in my workshop and it needs to have speakers that can be mounted high in the two corners of my shop.

Becasue my shop is built from comcrete block and has lots of metal machines, I want to mount an external antenna on the roof, so it needs an antenna port.

I just want to listen to a local FM radio station with a strong signal 8 hours a day. Modest amount of power, under $100. My current radio does not have an antenna port and the simple wire antenna will not lock into my station most of the time.

Any suggestions please.

My suggestion would be to hit the thrift stores and look for a "compact" stereo system with a broken CD player. I don't know of any current models, but I bet you can find something satisfactory for less than $20.00 and it will probably work for years.

Mount your antenna first and twist your wire antenna to the end of the lead coming from you rooftop antenna. As long as you are not trying to use HD radio or anything like that I think you will be very happy. I have done this successfully with FM and Shortwave.

I'd go to your local thrift store, purchase a nice old school tuner for $15-30, (something with RCA jacks in the back...most that I've seen have them), buy a set of good computer speakers (ones that have a power cord to drive the amplifier) for $5-15, then drop by Wally World, buy a RCA to Headphone cable ($9) and a female to female headphone jack. ($5)

You'll have a no signal issues with most older standalone tuners + an outdoor antenna. You can purchase all equipment mentioned above, plus the Winegard HD-6010 FM antenna for about $60-80. On top of that, if you ever get the notion to change stations, you'll get similar reception to what you'd get with a good car radio and antenna. So if you can pick it up in your car, you'll pick it up on your tuner!

On second look at your post, I realized you want speakers mounted in the corners of your shop. If that's the case, nix the PC speakers and related cables...buy an old surround sound amp (or whatever can be found) for $30-50. Either way, you're out less than $100

He means a unit that is nothing more than an AM/FM receiver with the ability to connect an outdoor antenna and speakers to it.

The thrift store suggestion that another poster offered is a good one. I think you'll find several items that will work. If that's not to your liking, Walmart still sells an inexpensive CD/Radio system with detachable speakers that will meet your needs.

thanks for the suggestion but have no idea what an old school tuner is

Hell yeah.

But honestly, around here anyway, it's been years since the thrift stores had any.

That's exactly what you need! But seriously if you are happy with your current radio try hooking your wire to the wire coming from the antenna. You can always shop for a radio later if it's not working for you. The Winegard HD-6010 FM is probably a great choice.

Yes indeed- split the signal from your rooftop antenna.I believe TV channel 6 ends at 88 megahertz, just where the FM band begins. If the outdoor antenna has the low band elements which most do,you are in for a nice reception surprise.
