Toxic Radio RF

KTOX-FM 98.1 (A) Wofford Heights (Lake Isabella) has been testing - on and off for the last few weeks. Comes in all over the southern central valley from Visalia-Tulare to Coalinga and even down to Bakersfield. Weak in and around the Bakersfield city area due to an existing Co-channel translator that has applied to relocate but has yet to move.

The 98.1 LPFM in Tulare has gone silent but even when "on the air" can no longer be heard -- even in parts of Tulare when KTOX-FM is on at the same time.

That is indeed great coverage for a new station at modest power levels. The FCC contour map doesn't do this station justice, as it only shows its 60 dBu which is just the surrounding mountains, barley making it onto the Valley floor. I ran the station specs through a Longley Rice prediction model and just like MisterGort stated, it does show coverage all over the South Valley and into Avenal and Coalinga.

There does seem to be some shadowing for East and South Bakersfield in the prediction model, which may explain part of the weak signal in addition to the translator that has not relocated yet.

Pretty darn good for 77 watts. Antenna is a single bay SWR FMEC.

The antenna is nearly 2,700 feet HAAT so that explains the awesome coverage. Still amazed how far that 77 watts goes. Impressive. Given the gain (lack of) and insertion loss from the coax, wonder if they did the math right on how much TPO they're coming out of their transmitter with.

264ft of LCF12-50J. TPO is 260W.

Owner took it off the air. He was just testing for a short time. Owner has another station in Mendocino that he is trying to relocate and upgrade. KUNK FM.

The sKUNK, exKMFB, is pretty well hemmed in. Looks to be destined to always be a class A. That upgrade with freq change proposal has been FOREVER; it's still not dead?

KUNK can upgrade to B1 on 3 different frequencies at several different sites. The former owner was trying to relocate to Fort Bragg as a lifelong class A. He didn't have the cash to get the job done and wanted to get his money back. Another local Fort Bragg B1 FM already has lost its' license. Fort Bragg alone is not a very good market. The Ukiah-Willits area has 4 times the Population and money. A site on one of the local hilltops could serve all of the area.

I can hear KTOX on the south side of fresno with car radio and good truck radio, not well enough to listen to really.

So obviously the FCC should grant them a translator in Biola on 104.9.

Your exactly right brettbutlerisok, and after that translator goes on the air the only remaining station left from Blue Ridge still heard in Fresno will be KDUV 88.9, but I'm sure they expedite any application that comes there way.

LMFAO yea but we need to go more west to Firebaugh the rock capital for 104.9 the new KKDJ or is 94.7 still available, KKBZ might have a problem with a Biola station, and that one serving very little population ,but they will have their certain Demos lol, BTW The Blue Ridge Stations and those that move below for more power come in Clovis with no problem, 103.3 is tricky.

I've been evaluating what to do with this. The hilltop you suggested will do what you say (might require a booster on the Ukiah side).

KUNK already has a translator on 96.7 that covers the Willits - Ukiah area. If the B1 is not good enough -- just move it to Fort Bragg and upgrade to FULL CLASS B. (Requires a frequency change). Maps in the mail.
