Birmingham radio ratings 12+ - Winter 2017, Page 1

WERC-AM/FM retains its position as the top news/talk station in the market, displacing WZRR "Talk 99.5". Magic 96.5 dips slightly. Jox 94.5 and the "Q" almost down a share. WPYA "97.3 PLAY' loses some of its "steam" from last period, trailing behind WMJJ HD2 "104.1, The Beat" and WERC-HD2 "Hallelujah 105.1". The bottom rounds out with "103.1 The Vulcan" (dropping to its lowest numbers in quite some time), WJQX-FM "Jox 100.5" and W297BF 107.3 aka Birmingham Mountain Radio.

Shame that WAPI/WZRR fell again, I was hoping people would finally embrace local talk over syndicated stuff. I heard Magic 96 and Jox 2 on skip down here on the coast the other day. WJQX was such a snooze fest, what little bit I heard. And I don't think Magic played a single song the entire time the signal was in. It was during the morning commute and it was commercials and traffic and commercials.

I always figured that WJQX is just a flanker station for Cumulus to protect WJOX. Only other sports station in town is W256CD aka "99.1 The Game" which is inconsequential in listeners when compared to 'Jox. I would think the downturn on WZRR is just temporary, and let's face it...these are just 12+ numbers. As much as I detest talk radio, I really believe it was a smart move for WZRR to go all talk and pair with WAPI. I don't know what other (music) formats Cumulus could try on WZRR that would prove successful. Regarding "Magic" not airing any music during that period...you probably didn't miss much, anyway... ;)

I thought I read somewhere long time ago Cumulus flipping 100.5 (at the time WAPI-FM) to ESPN Radio 24/7 was a condition for 94.5 to get Finebaum.
